| Why does Milo hate my sweet neighbor's sweet dog? Milo is usually very sociable and truly enjoys other dogs. Example: He met a new neighbor's Great Pyrenees today & they actually sniffed noses with no reaction from Milo. But, I have another neighbor who has a sweet & precious Basset Hound. As we take our daily walk, Milo goes ballistic if he gets within a block and a half of that dog----baking like a mad dog! It drives me crazy. I can't even get close to the lady anymore b/c of it. What is the deal? Anyone out there have any ideas? Any suggestions? Thanks for any help. |

| mine do this as well every winter when we cannot walk and then into the spring they are crazy unsocial again. when I walk them if they freak.. barking or even pulling I stop they stop we do not walk anymore. I then sternly repeat no bark until they hear me and finally respond and then I ask them sit. once all is calm again I continue walking. the approaching party has to just continue and I have to focus fully on making them no longer bark and freak. so if he is super upset by the BH then I would try gaining control first few walks without running into that him. that way he has some time to understand what you are telling him. it takes a few walks but once they get back into the swing they remember their manners knowing their walk will be interrupted. we sometimes run into large dogs off leash...in which case I scoop them. The last thing I want is Cedric's big attitude getting him possibly hurt. I am sure others will add what works for them. good luck and remember patience, consistency and more patience are key.

| Thanks so much for your reply Ruby. I truly appreciate you taking the time to consider the situation but I think you misunderstood my message. We take a walk almost every day of the year & Milo gets along with other neighbors' dogs--labs, yorkies, boston terriers, rat terriers, golden retrievers, etc----but not with this one particular Basset Hound. Somehow he can spot him a block away & when he does, he goes ballistic & stays that way until we are far away from him. I have tried all my usual disciplinary tactics but he won't stop that behavior. My husband said perhaps it is the dog's smell??? |

| Has he met the dog up close? If your neighbor is willing, you could try a forced butt sniff. Mine sometimes fear the other dog and will not offer a butt sniff, once I make them do it by holding them (so no one gets bit) then they're okay.

| Funny you mention the neighbor's dog Milo's having issues with is a bassett hound. I have a neighbor with a basset too and Magnus absolutely HATES him. No idea why. He's never so much as barked at Magnus. I've been trying to train to calm down but nothing has worked so far. So right now, I just keep an eye out and if I see them, I try to walk a different direction. If it's too late for that, I just pick Magnus up and walk away. I'll admit that Magnus isn't always friendly with every dog but his reaction to this bassett is like watching Cujo... |

| Those adorable, sweet, "innocent" Bassets are talking trash and it upsets your baby! Makes YOUR baby look like a crazy fool, while Mr.Basset waddles off, sweet and innocent..... |

| The BH has never even barked or growled at Milo, so I too thought maybe that would work so I tried it, but the closer I got the wilder he was. As someone else said about their dog---like Cujo. It really is terrible. I always have to pick him up and hold him where he can't even see the other dog but he still remains adamant. We walk 2.5 - 3 miles a day in the neighborhood & many times it happens halfway through the walk. Last edited by dalady25; 03-19-2014 at 03:40 AM. |

| You may be right but this poor BH certainly seems to be as innocent as a lamb. Rarely have I even heard him bark. |

You see!!!!!!! Like a manager I used to have.....she had a phrase I love....."They throw rocks and then hide their hands"!!! I am telling you....that BH is pulling the wool over your eyes!!!! Your baby can see straight through it!!!! (I have a little girl that does the same thing....but I have caught her red handed SEVERAL times!!!....taunting and sassing and starting trouble, and then when she gets the rest ready to tear her limb from limb, she is all innocent and sweet and "I just dont know why they all hate me, I love everyone and never do anything to deserve this" look on her face......) | |

| Or you could give the owner a T shirt and ask them to let their dog sleep on it for a night or two to scent it, then give it to your dog. At least that way is a bit safer and would be a first step towards trying to create a friendlier environment.
