Has anyone used a wireless fence with success for their Yorkie?

This is what was on my deck the other day.. MR HAWK...looking for something to eat!!
We live in a condo sub with a Hawk and Coyote so I would NEVER leave Baillee out alone on my deck or in the front yard. That was the main reason I am pee pad training her

We had used the Invisible Fence on our other dog but she was 45 pounds. I would never consider using that on Bailee, even if we lived in a different area, she is just too dinky. I would also fear the "shock" could/would hurt her.

Well labs are pretty hardy when it comes to pain. It's really hard to set them up to work for both small and large dogs. And they are not easy to install. If you don't do it correct it will have dead spots. They deffently don't work for all kinds if dogs. The low setting for small dogs is like the shock I get opening a door at Costco from static electricity. They are bulky and heavy. Yorkies are funny dogs. Kind of like people, all different. My female was an escapee and she would run like the wind when she got out. Nothing I did would keep her in without the electric fence. My male hardley would venture out. When I moved, I ended up adopting out my female to a older lady with a poodle because I didn't have any fence at my new house. I kept my male because he would never take off. You just need to know your dog and own personal preference. I understand both sides. Some people hate crates too. I want to say my collars were for under 10lbs. But it's been a long time. I wish I took the time to install mine. I'd still have my dog. Our dogs are like kids. We all raise them different. This is something we all respectfully feel strongly about. It's good that your researching all options to protect your baby.

Do you shock your human kids? If no then if dogs where really like your kids you wouldn't shock them.

Actually my son did it. You know, I respect your opinion on how you feel strongly about not using an invisible fence. I didn't attack you or make fun.

I won't respond with rude ignorant questions either.

This lady was just asking for advice from people with experence and share stories.

She didn't deserve to be attacked about it. To me , she must of valued the opinions of the lady's on this forum. I'm surprised that the replys of the high posters to be so harsh twords her. Compared to a child abuser.


Maybe say your concercerns and offer other solutions. As some people did.

You said your dogs where like your kids therefor I figured if you shock you dogs you must shock your kids. Even wearing the collar and feeling the shock is not the same as what a small dog feels and the effect it has on there body. I feel electric fences are animal abuse and cruel and I will have strong opinions about things I feel hurt dogs. It's obvious what the other solutions would be a fence, a leash or a kennel thought that was common knowledge. I guess sense my dog is my life I could not imagine shocking her or putting her in danger of being stolen, attacked by other animals or running off chasing something. I also would be terrified what that shock does to her little body. I guess I forget to a lot of people dogs are just dogs and my mind is not like that dogs to me offer unconditional love and they feel pain and they hurt.

I understand how you feel. From a Yorkie Mommy that took every saftey step possible not using a wireless fence. I even installed a safty cover on my pool that can withsrand 1200lbs. I had a wireless fence but did not install it.

I just got the phone call today to pick up Ricki's ashes at the vet today. Because when I had the flu one of my 4 kids let him out to go pee and I feel asleep on the sofa and when I woke up at 2am and realized he wasn't sleeping on my head. I was up walking the streets in the freezing cold only to find out the next day that my baby probaby could hear me calling his name while he took his last breaths in my neighbors pool 2 doors down.

I cry every day. My twins daughters still call his name everytime we go out front. All I think is if I installed that dam fence he'd still be here with me. He was 9years old. My kids are 13, 11, and 2.5 twins. He was family.

I looked online to double check and the weight limit is 5lbs and must be over 6 months. They have some like mine that can be set to beep only.

I have a rod iron fence, I'm on a golf corse. I installed a chicken wire type fence to keep him in. Added rocks everything. Baby gated my front porch. It honestly drove me crazy. But he was never really out by himself much. He was kept in the house when I would go out. I stay home with my kids, so he was always underfoot. I was going to put it back up because I was afraid he was gonna get hit by a car. It almost became a game for him, he would look to see if I was watching him to try to see how he would escape.

When I had it up before it wasn't my first choice. But I was on a busy street. I even thought about rehoming him. But I couldn't do it. Now I wish I would of if it would of saved his life.

I did get a new puppy(for the kids), I don't think I will be installing the fence because I have the chance to train him from a baby at my new house. Unfortunately I think he will be a little smaller full grown than I wanted. I was thinking about doing this dog run thing the breeder had connected to a doggy door. It was covered to protect from birds and other animals.

She does deserve to be attacked, the same as anyone else who comes here and asks about abusing their dog. Some of us look at our dogs as our children, so to me and others, abusing a dog is the same as abusing a child.
No one here will condone her using a shock collar on a Yorkie or any other small breed dog-heck I don't even condone it on a lab or Great Dane but certainly not on a small animal that weighs less than 10 pounds.


And the reason people got harsh is because she basically said "I don't give a damn about all those other posts where people think it's a bad idea, I only want nice answers from people who will back my nonsense in putting a shock collar on my small dog".

That does put a different spin on things.... You lost your little guy... You do what you feel is best.... Do what you can to keep the loss from happening again.... I like the covered dog run idea better than a shock collar/invisible fence.... but you do what you need to do... At least here where we live, I would never let our 5 lbs dog out with out direct supervision... we have eagles, coyotes and other dogs... never unattended in an uncovered environment.... not here.
