Started heat 3 days before schedule spaying, any advice? Hi All, I had an appointment to get Bijou spayed on Jan 6th after the holidays (at about 6 months 3 weeks) and she unfortunately went into heat (or at least started bleeding) about 3 days before that. I'm from the states but living in Switzerland for two years and dealing with this over here with VERY elementary French has been amusing. So far, I haven't found anyone with diaper things in stock so for now we've just confined her to a few rooms and covered things. If anyone has any advice on getting through the first heat though I would appreciate it. In addition to drops of blood covering everything, I've definitely noticed a behavior change - I think I've maybe heard her bark like three times ever until this past week, but now she seems to be barking at a ton of little things, especially other dogs. She also, understandably so I guess, doesn't fully seem like herself. I've read a decent amount online but always good to hear from people who have gone through it. Also - how soon after the heat cycle is over can I re-schedule the spay? The vet said at least a month but again dealing with language translation issues so hoping for second opinions if anyone else out there waited until after first heat or had something happen like this. Thanks and stay warm if you're in the Midwest - I'm originally from WI so feel your pain!

As for the barking this can happen. Just make sure she is not around any unaltered dog's. Also make sure there no way she can possibly get outside.

I'd also NOT trust a 'sitter' during this time. I think you can use infant diapers...cut a hole for the tail.

| I would not take her to a groomer, either. And watch her like a hawk, keep her as far as you can from other dogs. An "oopsie" on such a young pup -- still really a baby -- would be like an 8 year old human pregnancy.

Thanks - will wait 6 weeks then and potentially try the diapers as well (although she's not a pup who likes clothes too much). I read some articles that said not to take them out at all but she's used to decent walks every day and was stir crazy earlier this week when I kept her in. When I have taken her out I kept her on a short leash and picked her up when other dogs got in sight. I have also noticed she is also peeing everywhere - but outside so not as big of a deal as the barking, which I really hope stops once this is over!

Same thing happened to Sophie. We waited over a month until all swelling gone. Just keep her away form the boys Make sure blood work is done as a precaution. Sophie recovered in a couple days and back to normal within 2 weeks.

We questioned our vet about the walks and it is ok to go. You still keep your eyes and ears open none the less.
