| Spay worries My little Merry Piper is going in for her spay tomorrow morning, but I'm concerned because she's sounded congested for several days. A lot of reverse sneezing, snorting, etc. My vet thinks I'm overly concerned, but she's had problems with swallowing (water doesn't go all the way down sometimes) and coughing if her throat is touched during baths. I had $144 worth of bloodwork done yesterday, and they said that came back looking great. I can also have the option of an IV line during surgery for another $96...Is there anything else I need to do to ensure her safety during this procedure or after?

| I guess if no one has any advice/suggestions, we could delete this thread to avoid clutter. She goes in in the morning anyway.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Hi sorry this is not sooner. Do you trust your vet? Did the vet feel that these concerns are a problem? The congestion, sneezing? If you feel that the vet is trustworthy and he addressed every one of your concerns then you shouldn't have a problem. But if you do not feel comfortable then cancel. Only you can make that decision. I have a wonderful vet who spends the time and makes sure any concerns are met. Good luck. Let us know what you decide.

YT 1000 Club Member | I haven't had my female spayed but I know plenty of ppl here have. Hopefully someone will come along and put you at ease. Does your vet handle alot of toy breeds in regards to the procedure? What type of anesthesia is being used? I agree with the above poster about canceling if you feel uncomfortable and having a vet that you trust do the procedure. Last edited by ColesMommy01; 01-08-2014 at 04:46 PM. |

| Unfortunately, the vet who will be doing the surgery was vacationing up north when bad weather moved in. She wasn't in town to meet with prior to surgery, but I spoke with another vet at the same hospital yesterday and tried to explain my concerns. She didn't seem to think there should be any concern and said that trachea problems (and liver shunts) are usually seen in older dogs. She did run the labwork, but did not check for fever at that time. She assured me they would do so before the surgery (I can't tell if Piper has a fever, but her congestion sounds worse today than before). I know they must deal with a lot of overprotective pet parents...but they were kind when I brought in the actual printed out page of things to ask that I found here on YT (thanks YT!). I don't understand the anesthesia well enough to know what they should be using... I'm probably rambling, but I'm sure many of you know exactly how antsy one feels just before giving our Yorkies over to someone else's care. Each one is precious and irreplaceable. P.S. Thanks for replying!

| If there is any chance that this is a sickness (kennel cough), it should absolutely not be done tomorrow. CT and LS are common in Yorkies. They can be diagnosed at any age. If the swallowing issue is chronic it needs to be diagnosed. Fluids should not be negotiable. General anesthesia = fluids at all times. I honestly would be concerned that they would do it without.

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | Sending prayers the spay goes well. But if your gut is saying wait I would voice all your concerns in the am before the spay I would think they could take her temp and check her breathing to make sure she healthy first

| I think if I didn't 't feel comfortable I would put it off until I did. We know our pets better than anybody. Best of luck with your decision. |

| Thank you, horsnaround and Kentuckyyorkie. I'm arranging to be up extra early in the morning and free to observe how Piper's doing well before the appointment time. How she is behaving then and what her temp at the vet is will help me decide if this surgery should be postponed. I'm definitely going to trust my instincts, I think--I spend so much time with her, I do know her better than anyone else. And she's trusting me to make the right call. that I do!

| She won't necessarily have a fever with kennel cough. But the last thing you'd want is for a mild infection to turn into pneumonia after surgery stress. If it could be this she should not have surgery. It is also pretty surprising that a vet would okay a dog with this to be in the hospital fir an elective surgery.

| Best wishes and good luck with whatever you decide. I agree with Ellie May...if she has a health problem, surgery isn't a good idea.

| It's not a big deal to cancel and reschedule when your baby is 100%... def not a good idea to do a spay on a possibly sick doggie. Sending prayers for her and you.
