| Need help with barking boy at night!!! Recently we added a little boy to our pack. We have had him for almost 2 months with no barking or crying at night. The last 2 nights in a row he barks and whines for over a solid hour starting at about 2:30 a.m. I get up for work at 4:30 as it is so this feels like I don't sleep at all and don't know how to handle this situation before it becomes a bad behaviour!!! He is a tiny boy , he's 2.5lbs. And is 7 months old. He has food and water with him in his pen, his toy frog and a very warm comfy bed with 2 soft blankets. Like I said he has been good for 7 weeks but not now. I don't go to him so it doesn't become a habit but did today as he woke the rest of them after an hr of yelping, baking and whining!!!!! What do I do?

| When we first got Jess she didn't make a peep the first few weeks! She was about 11 months old. We were saying "wow this is going to be easy" yeah, well that didn't last. I think the first couple weeks they are so scared and out of sorts they just kind of hibernate. Then when they get a little comfortable it all changes. She started barking at night, every night. For weeks. At my wits end I bought a medium crate, set it up in my daughters room with a bed and a pee pad and miracle of miracles she stopped completely. I don't let her sleep in our beds so this was the best alternative. Just hearing my daughters breathing works. Trust me if she is on an overnight she knows if she isn't there so we drag the cage to another room. (luckily I have four daughters so someone is always home. You may want to try a crate in your room for a while then gradually put her with the other dogs.. |

| Rocco was around 6-7 months old when he started barking and whining at night too. I'm not even gonna lie to you - he wanted out of the crate. He was just done with it, cold turkey. My dh let him sleep in our room NEXT to our bed (not in it) and he has slept peacefully every night since (he's almost 4 years old).

| Is he done teething? Maybe leave a shirt or something with your scent on it? Does he get to sleep with the other dogs? If you're leaving food/water.. then maybe he does need to potty like Lovetodream88 suggested. Do you leave pee pad in there too? He might get over it within few days or you might have to do some trial/error type thing. See what works. I know what it's like not being able to get decent sleep... Hope he calms down soon! |

| Dear Sleepless in Ontario, You mentioned that your tiny, little guy was sleeping all by himself. Where are the rest of the pack? Are they all sleeping in separate crates, too? Maybe if he has a favorite 'pack buddie' they might sleep together..? Sounds like he's gotten lonely since he has finally realized your home is where he's going to stay now. We only have one Yorkie, and he sleeps on a washable fuzzy dog bed that sits on my bed; I think our floors are too drafty, except in the summer. In the summer, Taffy often gives-up his dog bed and streches out on my bed's quilt in the corner near the open window's breeze. On cooler, rainy nights, he's right back in his dog bed. And if it's really hot upstairs, we roll in the portable airconditioner for me, then, he goes back to his dog bed, or under the covers with his head out to sleep. When he was a puppy, he slept on my bed and would sometimes scoot under the covers if he was chilly and curl up with his back against me. (We did try a crate in the basement--my Husband's idea!--but Taff was so lonely down there, and so he wimpered & cried for hours! (Taff had always slept with his mom & brother before the both pups were sold.) Now, Mike's bedroom floor is Directly over the pup's circular pen and the bed crate that Mike had attached to the open ends of the pen in the basement. Taff Hated the cement basement; no one actually "lived there"; so, you know who got to hear all the puppy's noises...right, Daddy! Then, Mike finally suggested I take the pup back up to my bedroom. Ha! No more noises! Sleeping puppy! He curled-up next to me for security.(He only got up to use his pee pad--actually a plastic boot tray I got at WalMart store & put in lenths of newspapers in it.) Now that he is 3 years old, he very seldom ever uses that tray. He waits for me to take him outside to potty, so he can get his meat jerky treat! The only sound Taff ever makes at night now is if he 'growls' if a skunk or a possum slips into the yard. Also, when Daddy drives home at nights around 12:30 a.m. from singing & playing guitar up at the National Park Lodge about 8--10 evenings per month (April through end of November). Then, Taffy barks! Even though he knows who it is! (I think this is more of an excited 'greeting barking' to be sure I know Daddy's home')) He goes down one flight of stairs to the little window on the stairway landing, looks out, and barks and 'howls' until he sees Mike open the kitchen door. (Mike taught Taff to 'howl' with him for his sports' teams homeruns & touchdowns, so Taffy usually adds in this little 'howl'--"Ooooooo!", to greet Mike at night! I have never heard other Yorkies "howl"; bark & yip, yes, but not howl.) Well, the two go through their greeting & pats in the kitchen. After Mike puts away his coat, guitar case, and heads to the restroom, Taffy scampers back up the two sets of stairs and is back on my bed, ready to curl up and sleep. When I was in the hospital or on a trip with 2 old college buddies, Mike let Taff sleep on his bed..Ha! He said sometimes Taffy would at first go back up to lay on my bed, and finally he didn't & stayed with Mike. (We do give Taff his heartworm and flea & tick meds, so we haven't had any problems with him bringing fleas or ticks inside, and I brush him daiy & give him baths in the tub on a rubber mat at home. Maybe you could try his crate by your bed? My friend's basset/corgi mix dog sleeps in a dog bed on the floor next to her. Did the puppy sleep in a little group pack at his original breeder's home? |

| Thanks everyone Thank you all for your help..... He does have a pee pad , water , food and his 2 favourite blankets and toy, all of which has been fine for 7 weeks I have 5 girls also, one is in grate beside my bed, one is in crate on my bed, 3 others in my bed, one spoons me and the 2 seniors are at the foot of the bed on my old housecoats. He has been in a pen for all 7 months including with the breeder, I kept everything as he was used to. But reading all your responses, sounds like he is entering his teens and wants to be where the girls are. Only problem there is he does not hold it all night and is not used to a crate! He also is too little to get on the bed, he'll fall off. Wondering if every night I bring his pen and things to my room :/

| And sorry, yes he slept with his litter mates right up to 5 months old, only spent 1 night alone before he came here. I just don't understand why he has been fine right up until 2 days ago. I need my sleep , I'm miserable today....... Well I guess quite often my hubby says! Lol I love love love this little man and his breeder did an awesome job with him.

| It sort of sounds like he does want to be where everyone else is... Maybe he's now all settled in and now realizes, he's the only one that's left out while rest of the "pack" is sleeping in the same room. You can always get a step thing to your bed so they can use it to get on/off your bed. |

| Dogs in general, and especially yorkies are pack animals- they have an ingrained need to sleep close to the rest of the pack. If the rest of the pack is on or near your bed, then let him try it out. At 7 months, he should be ready to try, at least. 2.5 lbs shouldn't be too small to be in bed- well, I don't know how big your bed is anyway. Billi is 2.7 lbs and sleeps in our bed since she was about 6 1/2-7 months. (She's almost 9 months now) and we've had no issues. We do have a ramp for her to get in/out of bed to go potty, or eat/drink. You might try something like that for him? We made a makeshift one at first using two old pillows angled downward for her to slide down.

| Update Hi everyone, just thought I would update my little Stevie... Well the next night we left things as they were to see if it was just two bad nights. He cried and carried on at 4:00 am which is only a half hour before we get up so all went ok I guess lol . He's on a 4:00 am roll now, 4:30 is hard getting up for work, now it's another half hr less for me:/. I will be trying a crate in my room should he fire up this behaviour again! I will be back if more issues arrives and thanks all for your help!

| Update Yes I have a king bed , very high up and dangerous for any inexperienced puppy so I can't chance it until I get pillows for all around entire bed. My girls were afraid to use steps so I carry up and down
