I have had him vetted, all shots up to date, the vet said he is healthy.. But his stools are still very soft, he is a Biewer, any thoughts or suggestions???? It is hard to house train, puppy pad etc when he seems to have this issue... What can I do???? I know he is still young, but he is also very smart, just need advice... The vet suggested Science diet for Toy breeds he gets no human food ... |

| Welcome to the forum. Soft stools are not normal. Did the vet test a stool sample? What does Kayne eat?

Is Science Diet kibble the only thing he eats? Or does he get treats too? Eating too much or eating the wrong thing can cause loose stools too. For instance, when Max was a pup, a tiny bit of peanut butter made him have a loose stool. With a puppy, my primary concerns would be coccidia and giardia: Coccidia and Giardia – The “Non-Worm” Parasites | Frontier Veterinary Hospital - Hillsboro, OR Veterinarian & Pet Clinic for Dogs & Cats . . .

| There are some things you can give your puppy to help with loose stools. Canned pumpkin (careful not to give pumpkin pie mix!!) and Benebac probiotic. I tend to use both or either one when my pup is sick and having an off day, tummywise. However, since this seems to be an ongoing problem, if I were in your shoes I would focus all my energy on finding the right food for your pup like Maximo suggested. Sometimes they are allergic to certain ingredients in the foods or the ingredients simply don't agree with their tummy.

| Perhaps you should look for a new vet. When you say "loose stool" is it really runny like watery or is it soft? Have you the pumpkin like Dvlish suggested? It usually helps with loose stool. Also, while you're trying to decide on the right food, perhaps boiled chicken breast would be good? It's another form of "bland diet". | Does the dog food he is eating have any corn or soy in it? He might need a different kind of dog food.

| Food His food does not list corn in ingredients.. Going to try the pumpkin suggestion and if this does not work, going to change food.. Just gave him his bath and he was running, playing.. Does not act sick.. This is why I think it could be his food.. I feel bad to punish him for potty behavior if in fact he is sick ... But also can not let him learn bad habits...going to try food suggestions unless his behavior changes then time for new vet.. He does not even attempt to go to pad any longer, any suggestions on this???... |

| Remember to change the food gradually. Just outright switching it will cause more trouble. Start mixing it in a little at a time and increase the portion of new food slowly. Maggie was on Royal Canin puppy when we got her at 12 weeks. She didn't love it so we got Royal Canin YORKIE puppy, different formula. She liked it. At one year old she switched to RC adult yorkie food. Her stools have been "Normal" except for the occasional one. She is 3 1/2 now and has never had an anal gland problem. I think they need firm stools to keep the glands naturally "expressed". I am no expert though, I'm sure the experienced owners will correct me if I'm wrong. |

| Did the vet check for coccidia? It sure sounds like that could be what is wrong to me. It won't show up in the stool as a worm but when Kyra had it her stool looked like it had tiny grains of sand in it.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I do not like science diet dog food. I know the vets push that but I really think you should change to a higher quality food. I feed Wellness Super5mix complete health and my dogs like it. Mix a little wellness wet chicken in it. Do some research on the different foods and their ingredients and you will see why I do not care for science diet. |

| Kayne First I want to thank each one for your suggestions, I called his vet again yesterday and explained his issues again.. he has had Coccidia, just a couple of weeks ago, the vet gave me meds which I in turn gave him, he went back and was tested again, his vet said he was fine, so now here we are. He gave me some prescription dog food yesterday to try, so we shall see. Going to get Pumpkin today.. He is also having potty issues with this, hoping he is better soon! |

| Just a heads up coccidia can reoccur and he may need a second round of meds.
