| I am scared... I am new to being a yorkie owner and new to this site. I posted earlier today with a general question, but now after having been on this site for hours and reading post after post I am just scared to let anything happen to my Rosie. She is very small at only 1lb and 8 weeks old as of yesterday. I took her out to the store with me a couple of times already and took her out for brief walks up and down the block. now i feel like I've totally exposed her to getting sick! And I feel like I have been terrible for trying to get her on a schedule or starting to try and train her so early on... Since yesterday I've noticed that she loves to roll and nuzzle in the grass (in the backyard) and I've let her. Should I not? Should I just keep her indoors and take her out only for a quicky potty outing until she is 12 weeks? I just want her to be happy and healthy and ok. This new mommy is stressed. |

| Ok well. Whats done is done. As Im sure you now know its best to keep a pup with its mama until 12 weeks of age. So the taking the pup outside has nothing to do with the 12weeks. Thats seperate. We recommend to not expose your pet to anywhere which parvo and other like diseases and such can be. Meaning wait until 2 weeks after their last shot. Which is typically around 15 or 16 weeeks. This may also vary. Best to confirm with your vet. If you have been in your house for a while say around 5 plus years. Taking your new pet in the yard should be okay. From what I have been told. I believe parvo can nest in ground for up to 10 to 15 years. Sorry for inproper terminology. I would look into it for sure. If you live in an apt. Or something in which another non vaccinated dog or pets may come across. I personally would look into pee pad training. As far as getting your pup on a schedule and starting training early. Go for it. I will start training from day 1. Im big on training my pets. Please ask for help or if you have any questions at any time. Thats what we are here for. We want your pup to be happy and healthy just as much as you do!!!!!

| You may want to keep her home, around her own yard until she has had all of her puppy shots. If you are interested in pad training you can work on that. Even then, due to her size, you will need to be extra careful with her. Her bones are the size of a toothpick if not smaller. I like big dogs but I do not allow them close to any of my pups, they are all small. There are lots of things to do inside to play and as young and as small as she is,she is still in need of alot of sleep and eating frequently. Gross as it sounds, keeping an eye on her poop will help you know if she is well or not. |

| With her size and age, if she does get sick, things can go downhill pretty fast. HOWEVER! She might be perfectly fine. It's good you're learning but try not to over worry yourself. You'll be more stressed then needed. Like what buffy512 said, what's done is done. As you keep an eye on her, make sure you have some "emergency supplies" on hand. Like nutrical, emergency vet numbers, etc.. Starting her training early is not a bad thing. But again, with her age, size, vaccines, etc.. it's better to keep her contained. If you have wild animals (deers, foxes, etc) that's able to get onto your back yard, then I think you should be more careful. Make sure you're right there with her in case she tries to eat/roll something she shouldn't. Like bird poop... Lastly, don't stress yourself out too much. She can probably sense it... |

| It's normal to be a little stressed when first getting a pup. You should ask Deb Sillers how many times I was asking her questions the first couple of weeks when I got Cookie LOL. I definitely wouldn't take her on walks or out to the store until after her last round of puppy shots though. I have never had a very small pup (Cook was 3 lbs, 7 oz when I got her at 14 weeks) so I can't offer too much advice on tinies other than not letting them jump off furniture period.

| Parvo can live in the ground for 10-15 years, but can be brought in by wildlife, birds and other animals., as well as people (shoes, clothes, hands). And your pup can still get parvo even after 3 rounds of shots. Ask me how I know???

| Thanks everyone. I hardly slept last night lol. Then I woke up this morning and Rosie was soundly asleep in her crate. I will keep all these things in mind as I care for my baby girl. |

| Welcome to you and Rosie. You have definitely come to the right place to learn about yorkies. So far you have gotten some fantastic advice. If it were me, I would keep her indoors and protected as much as possible from contamination from illnesses as possible. Would love to see pics of your precious Rosie. | You sound like you will be a great mom for Rosie. Try not to stress to much. Keep reading here and heed advise from YTR's that have raised Yorkies for a long long time. Some of what you read will be scary but oh so helpful. Yorkies are very delicate! Enjoy but also protect her!!

| Welcome Good advice! Keep reading reading reading ....there are all kinds of excellant advice here from many people who are experts with yorkies.... Me? I can only say what I know. And I am right in there asking questions too. Before I found this site I was told 6 weeks was the age to get a baby and 8 weeks was the timeframe now.....I wanted to leave her with her momma for 12 weeks but the breeder said the momma disconnected herself with the litter and she needs a new nurturer....???!! To come and get her...... Soooooooooooo go slow , be gentle , because everything the little thing has ever known has been taken away and all is new and frightening in this big noisy world. She will notice every sound there is in your environment. If she acts concerned about it hold her and say "it's ok, it's ok" cause I still do that after having Zoey 3 months. And they learn to know that nothing will "get them ", with your touch and comforting words of association. You are her human. Even your refrigerator kicking on and off is noticed.... I took my Zoey to pet smart as soon as the vet said it was ok and that is after their shots of course but boy does that help! Teaches YOU how to live with your pet and learn basic commands.Very helpful . They are very smart very young... Good luck to you! |
