| what would you do? Genius Barney has learned to escape the playpen during the day while DH and I are at work. I stood behind the door one day and watched him. He does it as soon as we leave the living room. He climbs out using the little plastic bars on the side. He's been doing this for about a week now. SO FAR, we have not found any accidents in the house. He only has access to hard wood and tile. As soon as we get in, we let all of them out and he goes a lot. So it appears he's holding it in during the day. I'm not sure what to do with him. We are gone for about 7.5-8 hours depending upon the day. The other dogs stay in the pen just fine, but they are both older and seem to enjoy the nap. Do you think that letting him out is too much freedom for an 8, almost 9 month old? To me, he's still a puppy. Also, I think it's a little unfair to let him have free roam when Anna is in the play pen. Should I just give up and not even put him in the pen? He isn't even staying there for 5 minutes. Grrrr. One more purchase gone down the drain.

| As long as he can't hurt himself, I'd probably leave him out. Could he get hurt while climbing out of the pen? I'm sure more experienced members have better advice.

| I don't think he can get hurt. It's plastic and not that tall. I am terrified I will find a big warp in the hard wood in a month or so under the furniture. It's really pretty funny watching DH and I in the afternoons. We look like we work for Terminex checking every place we can think of. All the while Barney looks on as if we're idiots. We are.

| Have you thought about maybe setting up a cam to see what he does after he gets out? How about you put a big bed sheet over the pen? |

| A cam is a great idea. I will charge it tonight. They probably have a big yorkie party once we're out the door. I'm not sure about the sheet. Anna likes to hide. So there are already 3 blankets in the pen. However, if he's caught misbehaving on video, we may have to do this.

| I think he's plenty old enough to be left out of the pen as long as he only has access to permittable areas

Thanks for the opinions. A lot of times things will be brought up on here that I have never even thought of.

| How funny. My male climbs out of pens too... I started containing them both in a large bathroom that we have upstairs and I have had no issue with my escape artist

| I have a top paw 24x24" 8 panel playpen that her crate attaches to, Gina can't climb that, although soon she will be able to get on top of her crate. We are getting a bigger crate to leave attached to the playpen though. Cheers Quad

| Gizmo is scared to death of the vacuum cleaner and the other day, he almost made it over the side of the playpen. Scared me too death and I figure its only a matter of time even though he is only 3 months old and a mere 2lb 4ozs, but I was worried enough to get a better playpen :-) This is the one I bought Amazon.com: Richell Expandable Pet Pen Medium... , because it also has a matching top that you can buy seperate, which I did lol, so they cannot climb over the top. I also liked it had a door near the sleeping area to let them out, as well as a slide up door at the other end for changing potty pads easily, plus it had enough room for all his food, water nd toys so he can play. I will let you know how it works once I get it. I can't wait !!!!! It had the added bonus of being almost the same color wood frame as my hardwood floors :-) it looks more like dog furniture than a playpen. |

YT 500 Club Member | When I first got my girl at twelve weeks she did the same thing. I was so afraid she would get hurt. I finally let her be free. Lucky you have hardwood floors. I have carpet. I didn't want to crate her because she came from a puppy mill. I felt she's been lo locked up enough. Well, with many accidents, and lots of carpet scrubbing she's been a free bird since then. I heard I could have turned the playpen upside down, but never thought of it. Oh well that's life! Good luck k!

| Laddy is my escape artist. He could scale a 3ft tall xpen at 5 months. We also put them in the bathroom if going to be gone longer than a couple of hours.

| This is what I would do, let them all hang out in the living area & leave some pee pads in a designated area so they can go if they need to. There was a yorkie on YT that got his leg caught on a ex-pen while trying to climb out...accidents do happen. Nobody was home & he was dangling there for some time, luckily he wasn't too badly hurt.

I appreciate everybody's thoughts. I honestly had never considered his legs getting caught. I will probably look into the pen with a top if we find pee. Our bathroom is not very big and I worry that he would cry all day because it is isolated from the rest of the house.
