| Potty training Hello, I just got my yorkie for my birthday. She is 7 months old to our knowledge. In the past two weeks she has been to three homes. So I understand that she is a little stressed and confused. Now I'm not sure how the past owners have treated her and what they have trained her. Now when my parents had her at their house they would take her out with our other dogs which are beagles and she would go potty. Then when they surprised me with her I would take her out with the other dogs and she would be fine then one morning I took her out and she wouldn't go to the bathroom. Well the next morning she went out and peed then I brought her to where I live which is alone in an apartment complex. I understand she can be confused on where she is living well I take her out often and she doesn't go potty at all then when I put her in the crate when I leave for work I come home and she was fine nothing in the crate. The next morning we wake up I feed her then take her out and she goes in the crate then I leave for work I came home and she pooped in their crate. Then the next morning i took her out she went poop outside then i left to go to the store and she was in the cage for not even 2 hours and she poops in the cage. Now I have read this happened for other people and its because the cage is too big. But I don't know if that's the only reason. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also I have considered changing the time I feed her to night time instead of the morning. Would that be a good idea to do or not? Someone please help me. |

| Welcome to YT! Congrats on your new baby! A couple things. Where is she suppose to go potty when you are at work? A 7 month old puppy can’t hold their bowl movements, and they shouldn't have to… My 6 year old isn't forced to hold it all day while I’m at work- he is left his potty pad. She also NEEDS to have her food down all day. What food are you feeding her? It will take a little bit to get both of your schedule’s down. She is new to you, so it will take time.

| She is a young dog and is confused. Most dogs do not potty on command....even well trained ones. They go when they have to go. Usually a dog will have to potty after holding it all night and if she did not do it right away it could be he bladder was empty or she just was unsure about where she is supposed to go. Putting her in a crate before she has emptied herself is only going to serve to teach her to potty in the crate. Maybe try getting up a bit earlier and taking her for a walk before you leave. Many times a dog is more prone to potty when they smell where some other dog or animals has already gone. You could also try taking her to the same spot each time you take her out and give her a word to learn that would indicate she is supposed to go potty. Don't leave that area until she has done her duty. When she does go give her a treat right there as soon as she has done it. Give her lots of praise so she knows that is what you were waiting for and then take her right in. Using the same area each time will create a scent that will trigger her to go there each time. It is going to take some time for her to un-learn what she had already been taught and re-learn what you want her to know. You need to learn how to time how often she needs to go out and eventually she will start showing you when she needs to go. You might want to consider getting her a doggy playpen for while you are at work. It's just not good for a dog to be in a crate for 8 to 10 hours a day. It can lead to behavioral problems later on. If she sleeps all day while you are gone she is going to need a lot of exercise and attention when you get home and are ready to wind down. I hope things work out for you and your new baby dog. Sounds like the poor thing has been through a lot. |

Amen to all of this! You always have the best "training" advice!! Walks are a great thing!! I know I have a male and they tend to “mark”, however if I walk Peanut as soon as I get home his potties in the evening are way less than when he doesn't get a walk. He will lift his leg on the whole walk.. until pee doesn't even come out!! Walks are a great thing, especially if you work all day and your baby is home alone. If also you get in the habit of walking, she will know what is coming when you get home. I do believe (gracielove maybe you can back me on this) dogs are creatures of habit and schedules) If you do the same routine with her, she will start to learn it. It won’t take long for her either. Peanut knows our weekday routine as well as our weekend routines, as I know his. Both of you have to work as a team.. Like I said you will get there, it just takes time.

Exercise also gets the body systems working so the bowels and kidneys will fully empty when given the chance. The morning walk is really important for getting things out so they won't have to go again real soon. A walk later in the day will help clean things out for the evening. Of course, the age of the pet always has to be taken into consideration. | |
