My puppy was only R3000=$300. But I think that the yorkie pups as pets in South Africa is not that expensive.
Thanks . . .

I love WIGGLE WIGGLE, your username always makes me smile!!!

What a sad story! :( Yes it is true that many of the dogs that wind up in rescue we do not know their whole story. Many times the original owners even lie to make themselves look not as bad. But you do make a good point. The dogs are in rescue for a reason. I guess I have been lucky that most of my fosters have not been particularly difficult cases. The worst was Scrappy, and well he didn't make it. :( But a rescue should make it clear that rescuing dogs could also be a crap shoot (although they are vetted) just like buying from a byb.

Your poor Momo! That just proves right there that just bc a vet is a vet, doesn't mean they necessarily know what they are doing!

Oh I didn't mean to bum you out! It's not a sad story. It's a happy story!! Momo was able to overcome the difficulties & hardship of the first few months of her life. She hung in there, pulled through & made it. She's now a healthy, happy, rough & tumble little tomboy who loves life! She holds her head high with the pride of her strength & courage. She's my little tiger ;)

And so that I'm not completely off the topic of this thread...she's a mixed breed (Yorkshire Terrier/Maltese) rescue from Connecticut. I paid a $450 adoption fee to her rescue organization when I brought her home at 13 weeks.

I'd say both you and Sharkie were lucky. She got him much too young and didn't even put in an honest effort for potty training before she got rid of him! 14 weeks old?! Shame on her, good for you!

I agree . I don't really know how long she had him . All I know is that when she handed me Sharkie it was love at first sight. No regrets on my part .

First let me say again I am so happy for you that you were able to rescue you little Biewer. But I have a question also. I am a little confused at why you keep saying he is rare. There are quite a few briewer breeders, many members here on YT. They are very beautiful but I am not sure I would call them rare.

I agree. Biewers are not rare. It is just a term that is used from BYB and puppy mills to jack up the price.

I found this older thread in the YT library & thought it'd be a good idea to add that link here as it contains a lot of helpful information: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pup...kie-puppy.html

We paid $550 for our first yorkie (Ginger). She is almost 10 yrs old now. We paid $350 for our 2nd yorkie (Maggie) because she had a small hernia, was the last of her litter, and was 13 weeks old and the breeder just wanted to get rid of her. Her hernia was small enough that it closed itself up (confirmed by 2 vets). She is 4 yrs old now. We also got a silky puppy on Father's Day (Bella). She was 11 weeks old and we paid $400 for her. We paid $300 for our maltese (Lilly). She is 3 yrs old now.

New here

Hi, I am MystysMom and we just adopted Mysty on July 20th. She is 13 weeks and 4 days old.
We are on that all mighty potty training. Let's just say this is about one of the toughest things I have ever done including giving birth to my own 3 children. LOL!
We look forward to many happy years with her.
We have 2 other dogs and we put our black lab down in March after 13 yrs that was certainly heart breaking as well.
I found this site in googling different things I needed to learn how to do.
I am currently giving Honey Nut Cheerios as a treat anything else I can give her.
She had ears that stood up when we got her but one has since started to droop. I have now cut most of the hair off of her ears she seems to have a lot of fur..
I look forward to learning a lot from here.

Hi, I'm pretty new here (and don't have my Yorkie yet) so if this is an inappropriate question, please forgive.

I realize this may be a somewhat personal question, but on several other forums I visit, cost is freely discussed. Never for judgment (i.e., you won't hear, "You paid WHAT?! I'd never pay THAT!") or for bragging ("Mine cost more, must be better...") or for the bargain shoppers ("Well, I only paid $xxx...,") etc. It's just another stated fact from people who are comfortable disclosing.

I think that in discussing breeders, and breeding practices, and all the other nuances of research that go into making a responsible, educated decision, cost does factor in.

I have been researching what I believe to be responsible breeders and have found HUGE variances in price. From $650 to $3900 (or more) for a Yorkie pup.

Everyone's budget and comfort zone are different, of course, but when prices paid are secret and unspoken, then prospective buyers are missing what I believe is an important piece of the decision-making puzzle. While most people are not looking for a "bargain" in buying their new pup, in my humble opinion, cost is a reality.

I also realize that different parts of the country (or world) are different, so if you do disclose price, please state the general geographic area of the breeder. (if you are comfortable disclosing the breeder openly, that's awesome too!)

And just to be sure we are all on the same page, unless stated otherwise, let's assume we are talking about healthy Yorkie pups, typically 12 weeks old or under (and not older adults); sold as pets, with limited registration rights (i.e., pup will be spayed or neutered, not bred.). And if your pup came with lots of goodies and "extras", please mention that too.

I think this thread has the potential to be a really valuable resource for people looking to adopt a Yorkie pup.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

I paid $500 for Abigail. Born/sold in FL, AKC, full breeding rights, first two vet visits. Both parents on premises.

However, I got a break because the breeder is a friend. She was the one who gave me my beautiful German Shepherd dog. Abigail was born the day after my GSD died.

I'm hoping to get my yorkie sometime in the next 6-8 months (depending on how my job situation pans out in the next month or two) and I've spoken to a few people I've met whilst out and about with yorkies and, as you do, been chatting away to them and admiring their dogs and, in the conversation, asked them if they've had any health issues and, rather cheekily, asked them how much they paid as I'm planning to get a yorkie soon. Most folks are more than happy to talk about their dogs once they see you are genuine :) It seems that here in the north-east of the UK pups seem to go for between £350 up to £500 for 'pet' standard which is all I want :) That seems reasonable and no-one I've spoke to has mentioned health problems. One lady had a 10yo boy and apart from neutering, a bout of kennel cough when he was 2yo and his yearly vaccinations he never sees the vet

I'm not going to rush into buying just any old pup as I'd like a healthy wee girl who will be with us for a long time so I'm going to start asking folk who have yorkies where they got their dogs from :)

As I have said, I am new here, but I don't think this is the best place to post your question. There are other boards devoted to breeder issues, Yorkie health, etc. You'll no doubt get many more responses there than on this "cost" thread. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for all the new stories and replies! Sooooo interesting!

Cooper2010 08-01-2013 01:23 PM

$500 when he was 5 months old. They reluctantly returned that to me after an expensive hip surgery 6 weeks later that was ruled to be genetic, and threatened them with Florida's puppy lemon law. I have no proof of it but I don't think he was socialized at all. He stands guard all the time, never relaxes and is just an uptight little guy.
