Katie was with her breeder that puts her heart and soul into her dogs, but she was three years old when I got her. Price, in this case, is different than getting a puppy. However, for me, even though my funds are in no way unlimited, it's not about the price of my dog. It never has been. I have an amazing, healthy dog with a wonderful temperament, and I couldn't possibly put a price on her. Living in the Northeast, the cost of purchasing a dog is much higher, but I will always get a dog from someone I feel is doing their very best to breed healthy, well adjusted dogs. It is hugely important that they do health testing. The emotional costs of having a sick dog are huge, as is losing a much loved member fo your family. If I couldn't afford a dog from a breeder I truly respected, I would wait until I could. The initial cost of a dog is negligible considering the costs of properly caring for and taking care of its physical, medical, and emotional needs. I have enjoyed reading this thread, but I feel very strongly about the price of a dog should not be (within reason) why you should choose one breeder over another. |

I will say get her insured now with an Insurance Plan that covers genetic and congential defects. I will be posting this message over and over again. For those that do not know I was a CPA in a former life time. Cost analysis etc is my forte. Look even good and even great breeders certainly can't protect against accident or injury. And many things we just don't have a genetic marker for. If your dog gets run over by a car, or mauled by a dog, do you have $5000 to diagnose and do surgery with. What happens if your dogs get cancer; at least $5K to treat with variable rates of success. What happens if your dog has CT or how about LP that develops later in life and needs surgery? $3 K or so. So do you guys have the funds over and over again? To date I have spent $12K on Magics rehab ddx and drugs for his DLSS. You guys prepared for a 12K bill? |
1 Attachment(s) I paid $200.00 for Sharkie he was 14 weeks old. I got him from a lady that got him from a friends of hers and was not able to train him not to use her house as a potty . I guess she was frustrated and so she sold him to me for $ 200.00 :) Lucky me |

3 Attachment(s) i paid $900 to a BYB back in Oct. 2011 for my then 10 week old Minnie Mouse. She was a tiny little thing as a puppy. Full grown now she is 3.2 pounds. Her dad was 4 pounds and her mom was 5 pounds. Looking back i should have done a lot more research on breeders but when i got to see my baby in person it was instant love. i'm very blessed that i have had no health or behavioral issues with her so far. Best $900 i have ever spent! Attachment 389840 Attachment 389841 Attachment 389837 |

I am textbook terrible when it comes to my purchasing history. Here are two examples of how not to purchase a puppy and one example of retribution. I paid $300 for Charlie....a teacup (they really sold him as a teacup..Yes, I know now how silly that is). He had no paperwork or registration and we exchanged money and pup at a parking lot. He ended up weighing 15 pounds. It was a pretty big cup. I am pretty sure he was from a puppymill type situation. He was not fully weaned. He kept trying to nurse off of our male dog, Max. Max was not amused. He had a bad case of worms. I think he was actually around 4 weeks old. This would explain why he was so tiny and grew to be so big. He was filthy. I have since seen multiple ads from them. They are constantly selling puppies. I paid $500 for Barney. I am still on the fence about his breeder. He is AKC registered. His paper work shows that he was champion sired and shows that they performed genetic testing but I don't know what testing was done. She offered no health guarantee and sold him without a spay/neuter contract. We were told he would end up around 9 pounds. We asked for a large yorkie. He is 7.5 months old and still only weighs 4.5 pounds. Again, I blindly purchased him from an ad in the paper. I wish I had known more about the right questions to ask. Anna's shelter fee was $150. My retribution. She dispels any myths about older dogs from shelters. She is such a blessing. I hope that in some weird way, giving her a good life makes up for Charlie's mom. |

Your poor Momo! That just proves right there that just bc a vet is a vet, doesn't mean they necessarily know what they are doing! |
Hi there. . . My puppy was only R3000=$300. But I think that the yorkie pups as pets in South Africa is not that expensive. Thanks . . . |
