| Benadryl and over the counter med warning I wanted to make a post reminding everyone to ALWAYS check with your vet before giving over the counter medicine like benadryl especially if your dog takes other medicine. We took Sammy to the vet for a bump and my mom mentioned to the vet he was rubbing his face well she suggested benadryl and my mom reminded her Sammy was taking medicine daily for his Collapsing Trachea (sorry can not remember the name) and the vet went and looked up if they could be taken together and found they could not or they could really slow his breathing down which wouldn't be good. So always ask your vet about any medicine and make sure they know what meds you baby is taking.

| Very good reminder! I'm glad your mom reminded the vet about Sammy's med.

| So true. Never depend on the vet or even human doctors to read all of your medical history at each visit. Always ask questions and double check. If the vet or MD doesn't like it then find someone else, your pet's life or even your own may depend on it. |

IF/when there is a severe allergic reaction that's progressing and you're not in the immediate vicinity of a vet, you absolutely should give Benadryl asap...it can often mean the difference btwn life and death. The correct route is really this: check with your vet if Benadryl is safe for your dog in the case of a severe allergic reaction, even if the dog is on meds that interact with other meds. Taylor - you should really check with your vet about this bc what if Callie is allergic to bees and gets stung, what would you do?

| Great information Taylor! I'm so glad you shared this as I hadn't thought of an interaction with other pet meds. I had to give Princess Sophie Benadryl after her surgery because she was having a reaction to the anesthetic she was given for her spay. The vet did say that I shouldn't use it to calm her down but only if she was rubbing her head on the floor a lot and not without vet approval if something else was going on. I hadn't had liquid Benadryl in the house for almost 20 years. LOL

| It was not the vet who we normally see and owns the vet office it was one who comes in once a week
