| Yorkies with allergies We have been back and forth to vets so many times in the last 12 months with my yorkie who had such sore paws. I was fobbed off for a long time that it was yeast infection but I did everything to get rid of that yet his paws didn't improve, well they got a lot worse. He could hardly walk let alone run, he is nearly 4 so full of energy etc. I insisted he had further tests including allergy testing. Results showed he was allergic to: All Grass, dock leaves, all meats, salmon, potatos, cereals, rice basically everything in normal dog food. He has always only eaten good foods either Royal Canine or fish4dogs never cheap food. SO a month ago he was put on antibotics again and anti histimines as well as new food Royal Canine Anallergenic which is a hydrolysed food. Last week he started imuno therapy. This is every two weeks for 12 weeks then every month for nine months then probo every 8/10 weeks for the rest of his life. Costing a fortune but hopefully it will desensitise him to the allergens. His feet have improved so much he can run around and he is like he used to be. Has any one else's yorkie suffered allergies and if so do you have any tips ??? |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Hi there. My Alfie has pretty bad allergies and from a very young age which is unusual. He too is on RC Analergenic. He gets bathed 3times a week with malaseb shampoo then with epi soothe, both are left on for 10 minutes each. Alfie takes two kinds of antihistamines every day and was on steroids for months but we have now weaned him off those. We don't know exactly what he is allergic to as his dermatologist won't test him until he is a year old, he is 11 months now. I think the baths really help him and being really careful that he doesn't get any crumbs or fallen food at all. Good luck, I know how heartbreaking it is to see them so miserable but Alfie is doing quite well now. We do have to keep jammies on him when we are out and at night, if he gets a chance to scratch he can really hurt himself.

| aw I'm sorry you have to go through this- I feel your pain. I went through the same thing with Chibi. It took forever to figure out it was allergies! Good news is once you get on a food/washing regiment and your past the initial flare up it does get better. I also put probiotics in their food, the vet said it helps with overall health and you can get it over the counter. It will get better, stick in there, Chibi (knock on wood) hasn't had any flare ups or had to even go to the vet in a while, we found a good regiment that works for us and just stuck to it good luck!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | We have lots of members here whose yorkies suffer allergies, including mine...especially my Marcel. I fully blame it on his immune system being pummeled right when it was developing...ages 4mths-10mths. He had giardia twice and then suffered after for months with the after effects. My Wylie also has itching/paw issues during certain pollen times as well; and we live in Arizona where the pollens are just the worst (in the desert). Anyway, we finally went to a Vet Dermatologist and they are AMAZING. I've learned a ton in the process. I believe that if the allergies are seasonal - then treat the season with something like Temaril-P or steroids if they work and/or OTC meds if they work. If the allergies are mostly year round, then I believe in trying Atopica and/or allergy testing and shots. Atopica was a miracle for Marcel - he does great on it. He used to wake up at 1am to chew/lick his paws, but no more when on Atopica . For allergy dogs, I think being on a high quality / low grain food is important, even if there are no food allergies. Dogs can be sensitive to grains and white potato, and since their immune systems are already turned up, it's important to avoid other potential/known allergens. Many allergy dogs are on grain-free diets/kibbles etcetera. Have you tried grain free? I hope your kiddo does great with the shots. Btw, they can do the shots and still be on Atopica, so it's something to consider if you're still not seeing symptom relief. Keep us posted on the progress!

| I'm so sorry for the poor little guy. Mine has allergies but not that bad. Her skin on her back breaks out normally to grains in food or environmental allergies which normally turns into a skin infection. I have been able to keep hers down by giving her an Omega 3 supplement for her skin, making sure to bathe her regularly, I wipe her paws every night before we go to bed so she can't drag pollen into her crate, and I also don't feed her anything with grain in it except an occasional treat but most of those I buy are grain free. I hope the treatment your doing work out great.
