| Flea treatment needed? My little Brody will be 4 months old in a week. Well, I think he may have fleas. I've looked through his hair and I haven't actually seen any fleas or flea poop or anything, but he keeps itching himself on his neck and ears and sides. And he also will lay down on the floor on his side and scoot to itch his side. So that's why I figured fleas. Definitely no rash or ticks. And he would have just recently got them from my father in law (he came over because he needed to flea bomb his house, so I figure he brought them over with him). Anyway, is it ok to start flea medicine even though I don't see the fleas yet? I figured if I could start him on flea meds then they might not have time to lay eggs on him and get on the carpet and get really bad. Would that be a good idea? I'm going to be getting some flea meds from my vet, and since he is so little (3lbs) and so young, he will probably have to have a topical flea treatment. Any suggestions on what to get him and maybe what not to get? Thanks for any help. |

| My vet won't let me use any kind of flea treatment on Abigail until she's 5 pounds. I wouldn't use anything unless your vet gives you an ok. |

| You should check with your Vet on the type of flea and tick treatment to use in your area. Frontline Plus works for me but not for everyone. I started my Chloe on Frontline Plus at 16 weeks (which happen to be in Jan but I do treat my dogs year round) on the box it states weight 0-22 lbs. I only used 1/2 the amount in the pipette for the first application then at 5months I started using the full amount in the pipette. At 16 weeks old Chloe weighed 3lbs 3oz. and at 5months she weighed 4lbs 1oz. I only used 1/2 the amount the first time just to make sure she would be alright with it and not make her sick. And the reason I started at 16 weeks was because she had finished with all her puppy shots. |

| Definitely talk to your vet before starting any kind of flea treatment. That said, I use Trifexis for my two. Not only does it kill fleas, it also guards against heart worm and other parasites. I give it once a month. Again, discuss with your vet what is the best course of action for your pup. Itching does not necessarily mean fleas either - your pup could be allergic to its food or have other allergies. Good luck.
