Default Flea treatment needed?

My little Brody will be 4 months old in a week. Well, I think he may have fleas. I've looked through his hair and I haven't actually seen any fleas or flea poop or anything, but he keeps itching himself on his neck and ears and sides. And he also will lay down on the floor on his side and scoot to itch his side. So that's why I figured fleas. Definitely no rash or ticks. And he would have just recently got them from my father in law (he came over because he needed to flea bomb his house, so I figure he brought them over with him). Anyway, is it ok to start flea medicine even though I don't see the fleas yet? I figured if I could start him on flea meds then they might not have time to lay eggs on him and get on the carpet and get really bad. Would that be a good idea? I'm going to be getting some flea meds from my vet, and since he is so little (3lbs) and so young, he will probably have to have a topical flea treatment. Any suggestions on what to get him and maybe what not to get? Thanks for any help.
