Definitely talk to your vet before starting any kind of flea treatment. That said, I use Trifexis for my two. Not only does it kill fleas, it also guards against heart worm and other parasites. I give it once a month. Again, discuss with your vet what is the best course of action for your pup.
Itching does not necessarily mean fleas either - your pup could be allergic to its food or have other allergies. Good luck.
