He did not make it, and believe me the poor baby was better off, he was severely injured.

Thanks for saying (writing) what many people feel. In 20+ years of being a dog owner, I've never let any of mine outside alone! Too many things can happen! So Sorry you had to have this happen to you.

You are SO RIGHT! There is a house we walk by sometimes on longer walks and my guys love to say hello to this little guy who is often running around in the yard, but George (also a Yorkie) climbs over his ~3' chain link fence to get out because he gets so excited when we walk by. This is cute and George is obviously a very talented escape artist, but it scares me that he is going to get killed some day by his owners who just don't seem to realize the risk. Even jumping down from that height is dangerous and I would NEVER let my guys out alone. NEVER! I will barely ever let them off the leash because I am worried that they will take off after a squirrel or robin, but leaving them without even watching is way over the top. Check this article our I just read... I am sure this guy thought his Yorkie was safe in a small pack, but he also almost learned a terrible lesson. And I'm sure we have all read or seen plenty of things like this...

OMG, Lynzy, I am so sorry you had to experience that. How horrible...how sad. To top it off, the lady turned her anger at you...pathetic.

I have had large dogs who hated being indoors in the daytime who I would allow to stay in a fenced yard when it was nice out, and one of them got her leather collar tangled in a small plant, freaked out and thrashed around so much she got it so tight she was choking. Last time they wore collars when I wasn't right there with them, too. Some things you think are safe...aren't. But, when it comes to a small dog, I never leave them alone. Too many dangers, especially since someone let one of my large dogs out of the fence yard and she crossed a busy highway before I found her. {{{Hugs}}} and nice choice on the Hot Toddy!

That's terrible. There are some cases where a doggy door and them being outside is safe. We have a brand new not even year old fence with nothing but grass in the fenced in area no plants no tress nothing. We don't have coyotes and Callie is much to big to be picked up by a bird of pray. The fenced in yard is also in the middle of three acres with no trees around. There are 8 windows and two doors (one door is all glass French doors) that look out to the fenced in area where she is not at for very long periods of time unless she is laying out in the sun. The fence is checked at least once a week for problems sometimes more. The fence can not be seen from the street and even though we are not in an area where there are things stolen there is a lock on the gate. Every situation has to be judge separately. I have only seen deer and bunnys in here so far. Callie is 16 pounds. All our neighbors have dogs.

OMG I can't believe it! I"m sorry you had to go through this Lynzy. A lot of people shouldn't own dogs, but that's how it is here, Me want, me get! Perhaps she will learn a lesson from this and that poor doggie didn't die in vain. How much you wanna bet the dog wasn't fixed either?

All of my dogs go outside unattended, the little guys have cat door to come in and out, while the big ones are outside all day and only in at night. My fence has cinder blocks all around the perimeter so they can't dig out (Aussie was an escape artist), plus fence is 6 ft tall and checked regularly. We live in suburban/country. Very little traffic with creek seasonal creek between mine and neighbors yard. No coyotes, and few birds of prey since my lab scared them away when we first moved in 9 years ago. I think if the human is responsible for their pets and provides proper environment, there is no problem with dogs going outside. Accidents can also happen inside just as well.

I'm so sorry you had to go through something so awful. It breaks my heart thinking of the pain that poor dog was enduring and his crying...and I can't imagine being there to see and hear it. Hugs to you and bless your heart for trying to help the poor baby.

I agree. Small dogs should NEVER be left outside alone. I know, I know, some little dogs aren't very little, xyz yard is safe, etc. Nope. Not safe. We have a 17 pound dog and not even he is allowed out alone. WHY take the risk???

oh lynzy... I am just crying with you here. I don't understand either.
I do let my guys out the back but I stand out there and count tails to be sure they all come back in. Even with me standing there the least one got out one time and I had to run through back yards in my pink pj like an idiot... but hey.. that is what I had to do.

This just breaks my heart.

I can't believe you advocate for doggie doors after your own experience with Callie. There's no reason for you to stay inside and have her go alone-- go with her for crying out loud!! There are fisher cats here and a lady had her foot mangled while fighting it off to protect her LARGE dog!
