| concerned about Barney Ok. You all are about to see how obsessive I am about things. My Barney has not gained any significant weight in about 3 weeks. He is 18 weeks old. He's been stuck at 3.9-4.1 pounds depending upon the time of day. My vet said not to worry that he has a light bone structure and he is probably just running off the calories. However, he does not eat very well either. I have to hand feed him most of his food. He received a dose of comfortis yesterday and he has been very lethargic. He is usually running around and attacking anything that moves, but this morning he is just laying in my lap. I am hoping this will wear off as the day goes on, but this is the second time he has had a day like this. Should I be concerned? |

| I have been feeding him Royal Canin. He eats it ok, but I have to feed it to him one piece at a time. I also make chicken and carrots for him. He will eat that most of the time, but again I have to hand feed it. I tried canned food, but he doesn't eat it that well. And it is really gross holding that in my hand . Fortunately, he is not showing any other signs of illness. It is just sad to see him laying around. He is usually a wild man in the mornings. |

| I would keep an eye on him. If he isn't better I would definitely contact my vet. You might call them and see if this is normal after a treatment. Hopefully he will be better soon! As far as eating, our little ones can be very picky. I have tried different foods and have found some they love others not so much. You might discuss with your vet about a possibility of changing foods.

YT 2000 Club Member | Read the reviews on comfortis. I don't like what I read about that stuff. Yes it kills the fleas right away. I do not want my Yorkies acting strange. Be careful what you use. Do some research. I hope Barney is better soon. |

YT 2000 Club Member | Barney is 18 weeks old. He is a puppy. Are you feeding him puppy food? I give mine Blue Buffalo and they have puppy food. I would put a little water in that to make gravy. I put a little wet food mixed in for flavor. My boys love it. I measure out their food in the am. I feed them 3 times a day. That way they are not starving in between. You may just leave his out if he free feeds. I have an old Yorkie and a youngster so they eat separate foods. Hope this helps. |

| Thanks for all of the advice. I have a 15 year old pomchi. When I leave food out, he gobbles it up. He's looking better than he has in years! However, this makes it difficult to free feed. I am using Royal Canin for puppies. He loves cheerios. So when he's had a very bad eating day, I usually feed him some to make sure he gets enough calories. I have been concerned about his build since I got him. He is a long, skinny puppy. It is hard to get used to. We had a big ole yorkie before him and he was a healthy eater. He is coming out of the lethargy. So, I hope it is all related to the Comfortis. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I feed Royal Canin; in fact it was one of the only foods my finicky eater Joey would eat. He's not as finicky as he's gotten older, but he's done really well on the food and I believe they have a great quality control. I do agree you should keep some food out all the time at this age. They can easily run out of their energy reserves and food should be available 24/7 until at least 7 months. I think you are making a mistake by hand feeding, you are teaching him to become too dependent on you, and this isn't good for your dog's self-confidence. If you are going to hand feed, it should only be done while training. Go easy on adding the chicken and carrots, if you are adding too much your dog will reject his kibble and chicken and carrots aren't a balanced meal, and don't contain enough calcium for a growing pup. If over 1/3 of his diet is coming from other forms, his diet is no longer balanced. Do a google on Comfortis and you will find many dogs get lethargic on it. I don't use flea medication, so I can't advise you, but your dog might be sensitive to the product and/or too small to use it. I'd ask my vet about this. They go through growth spurts, so it's okay if your dog isn't gaining every week, but I would be worried that the flea medication is too strong for him. Are fleas really bad in your area? Are there other things you could use? You might want to check out this article: Comfortis side effects? - Dog Health Forum

| My Jess is long and thin so she always looks thin. She tops out at 5 1/4 lbs. She is now 14 months old. I too, like you did all the things I probably shouldnt have when she was being finicky. Hand fed, changed the food a million times etc. She also eats royal canin. it never has recalls that I have heard of so i stick with it. I find she is very scent driven. So when I decided I didnt want to hand feed her (like you wet food is gross) I cooked a boneless skinless chicken breast in spring water, cooled, drained any minimal fat and stored it in ice cube trays. I now take her royal canin, put it in a bowl, microwave a cube and pour it over. Let it cool and soften and leave it out. She inhales it. Somtimes I had cottage cheese, somtimes chicken sometimes wet food but she will eat it with just the chicken water. |

| I would definitely re-evaluate the Comfortis versus other options for your Barney. Also, I wouldn't be too worried about the weight gain - they tend to gain in spurts. If you feel he is not eating enough, though, try NutriCal. You could use it as a treat a couple of times a day - gives a boost of calories. Until Mandie turned 6 months old, I gave her a little (I mean like a couple of squeezed licks) 2 times a day as treats. Don't over do it though because you could inadvertently cause blood sugar spikes and lows, leading to hypoglycemia. Just a tad and that way Barney will get some extra calories

I make sure they have eaten well before giving it to them. Mine have HORRIBLE reactions to Front Line and all that liquid stuff you put on.
