| Feeding My yorkie is 5 years old and I am having a job getting him to eat what is stated for his requirements. They say 1/4 cup twice a day. I have bought a good quality food (Precise Adult) but he only eats less then a 1/4 cup a day and sometimes only 1/8 of a cup. He doesn't seem to be underweight (5lbs) and is within the acceptable weight range for a yorkie. I usually try to feed him twice daily but was wondering if I cut it back to once a day if I would have better luck getting him to eat a little more. Any suggestions on what to do? Oh, by the way, if I give him food that I am eating he will gulp it down but I really do not want to start that trend. I have been told by a dog trainer that he is not food motivated. I can't even get him to eat by trying to hand feed him. Yorkies are known to be hypoglycemic but is that only in puppies or also in adult dogs? |

Now on getting him to eat. I wouldn't reduce to once a day. They can get sick if they have empty tummies. Try a different food. I had to do that with Mandie in the beginning. She loves Blue Buffalo Wilderness. If, in the end, you can't find a food he likes...try drizzling a little bit of chicken broth on his food. Not enough to make it wet or anything..just drizzle so the smell is there mainly. Seems to help a lot of times when they are sick - to get them to eat - I think the smell of the broth is more enticing than the kibble alone..? Worth a shot.

| I literally bought 22 bags of food before I found one Chewbacca would eat. They were all high end dog food. He is just super picky. Now he eats wha he should ever time he gets fed. I feed him Fromms now even though I have to order it online or drive 32 miles one way to get it...lol.

| He visits the vet every year for his annual check-up and vaccines. They don't seem to be worried. I guess it's just me. He eats the food but he just doesn't seem to eat very much. Maybe I will try putting a little soup stock or oatmeal on his. He is not emanciated in anyway and even if I leave his food on the floor all day long he just eats a small amount. Guess I will have to stop being a worrysome Mom. My daughter has 2 yorkies and they would eat and eat and eat until they got sick. Guess I was just comparing him to them. Matbe where he is a smaller yorkie he doesn't need as much even tho my daughter's are only about 5 and 51/2 lbs. Some dogs are food motivated and some aren't. Guess my little guy isn't. Thanks for the feedback. |

| 1/4 cup twice daily is too little. Switch him to real food and you will have no trouble at all with him not eating.

| All of the brands of food that I have tried states between 1/4 and 1/2 cup twice a day for 5-15 lb dog so I went by the least amount. Even if I keep his food down and accessible to him all day long he doesn't eat much. I have tried him with chicken but it gives him the runs. What do you mean by real food as I have bought a high quality dog food for him. It maybe just that he is too picky with what I give him. |

You had mentioned how he likes people food so this should be an option for you. I really think that he's eating enough. If the vet seems okay with his weight and he eats the food some...he'd eat more if he was hungrier. Also, 1/4 twice a day is probably fine if he's not really active. Mandie eats a total of 3/4 to a 1 cup a day (split up). She runs a lot on some days and it leans more towards the 1 cup. Animals usually know by instinct how much food they need.

| Thanks MadiesMom, I thought I was giving him enough according to the pkg directions. I have heard about al of the recalls and I get my food from a reputable Poodle Breeder who also has a kennel, does dog training and is a very good souce for information. Ty and I walk about 3.5 to 4 km everyday and he still only eats a small amount. I was under the impression also that if the food was available to him he would eat if he was hungry. I really do not know enough about making my own food in regards to making sure he has the proper nutrition so therefore I depend on professionals to help me in making the right choices for him. Thanks for the reply and for confirming that he is eating enough. He has been around the same weight ever since he has become an adult. His Mom was only tiny and his Dad was probably about 8-9 lbs. I am sure if he were hungry he would definitely let me know in his own little way. He maybe little but has a very large personality and attitude to go along with it |
