I think when she said "real food", she meant like home cooking. A lot of members here actually home cook food for their pups (instead of buying store bought). There have been a lot of concerns with recalls and some ingredients so for some, home cooking is the answer.

You had mentioned how he likes people food so this should be an option for you. I really think that he's eating enough. If the vet seems okay with his weight and he eats the food some...he'd eat more if he was hungrier. Also, 1/4 twice a day is probably fine if he's not really active. Mandie eats a total of 3/4 to a 1 cup a day (split up). She runs a lot on some days and it leans more towards the 1 cup. Animals usually know by instinct how much food they need.
