He doesn't seem to be underweight (5lbs) and is within the acceptable weight range for a yorkie. I usually try to feed him twice daily but was wondering if I cut it back to once a day if I would have better luck getting him to eat a little more. Any suggestions on what to do? Oh, by the way, if I give him food that I am eating he will gulp it down but I really do not want to start that trend. I have been told by a dog trainer that he is not food motivated. I can't even get him to eat by trying to hand feed him. Yorkies are known to be hypoglycemic but is that only in puppies or also in adult dogs? |
Maybe he doesn't like the food. I guess the first thing is to make sure he is NOT underweight. Have you asked your vet? Just because 5 lbs is in a normal Yorkie standard range..doesn't mean it is the right weight for your particular Yorkie. Make sure he is a healthy weight with your vet ok?
Now on getting him to eat. I wouldn't reduce to once a day. They can get sick if they have empty tummies. Try a different food. I had to do that with Mandie in the beginning. She loves Blue Buffalo Wilderness. If, in the end, you can't find a food he likes...try drizzling a little bit of chicken broth on his food. Not enough to make it wet or anything..just drizzle so the smell is there mainly. Seems to help a lot of times when they are sick - to get them to eat - I think the smell of the broth is more enticing than the kibble alone..?
Worth a shot.
