Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Spaying: Julie's big day is on Friday Julie will be spayed this Friday. I have some concerns: 1) Don't know what to bring her home in: Crate, laundry basket or something else (I brought her home with this). What do you recommend? 2) Is there something I should be doing/not doing? Or expect from her? At the moment, I am very concerned about #1. I need some guidance here. Thank you very much. | I used an airline crate to bring my Jilly home. Get a soft recovery collar is you have a dog that might try to lick or chew her incision but it won't be necessary if she doesn't do this. Jilly did once or twice and I told her to stop and she did. But some dogs won't stop. Just be ready with a good soft recovery collar in case. Also ask the vet exactly what to do if the dog seems to be hurting before it is time for the next dose of pain medicine and find out what to do. If she can't be still, keeps repositioning herself and circling around a lot, whining, shaking, etc., she is likely hurting and you'll need to know what to do. Also find out what to do if she won't eat or drink water after 8 hours and what you should specifically do if she refuses one or both. That's all I can think about right now?

| Hi Starlette, I so totally understand your nerves. I've gone thru this with 3 dogs in my life and each time, I was a nervous wreck - even when knowing all I'm about to say to you 1. I brought Mandie home in her normal carrier. My vet is just 3 blocks down the road and Mandie was lying down the whole car ride home so it wasn't too big of a deal what she was in. My answer to you is - whatever she is most comfortable in on a normal car ride..go with that. 2. Dogs and all animals really instinctively "lick their wounds." As Jeanie said, some don't do it incessantly and some do. My boy has to be told on a normal day to "stop licking" because he will just go on and on and on. Mandie will lick and I say "enough" and she'll stop. You need to know how Julie is - a licker or no? My vet actually is "anti-cone" and so am I (if anything else will work). I just put a tshirt on Mandie. Some buy baby onsies and modify them. 3. My extra tips from my own experience: Have chicken broth, pedialyte, a medicine dropper/syringe, and mineral oil on hand. The first day or 2, Julie may not want to eat or drink. You can make sure she drinks by hand feeding her pedialyte. You can drizzle chicken broth over her kibble to make it more enticing. Be prepared to hand feed her a few pieces the first night. By the next day or so, she'll eat on her own probably. Also, drink on her own. The mineral oil is just to help aid with any constipation caused by pain in her tummy and/or the meds. A few drops in her food and a bit rubbed on her bottom can aid her "going". What should you do/not do? While Julie is at the Vet, keep yourself super busy!! Don't let yourself just sit and think - that leads to worrying which helps nothing And, you call that vet for updates as often as you want. Don't feel like, "they said they would call..I'll wait" or "they are busy, I don't want to bother them." They are used to us mommies worrying - you won't bother them - call if you need to

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I’m spending the night over at my parent’s house tomorrow night since Julie and Mom’s shih tzu, Tori, are going in at the same time (Tori has had three “accidental” pregnancies complements of I believe her son/brother, Pablo which is the reason for Tori being spayed). Luckily, the vet’s office is a hop, skip and jump from their house. I’ve been thinking of spending one more night at their house so I don’t have to jostle her around in the car that day. Am I being overly cautious? Soft recovery collar – Does the vet provide this or should I go to Petco to purchase one? On the norm, I’ve noticed Julie is pretty much not an incessant licker. Activity: This is probably a very stupid question that I should already know, but I don’t. How active should she be/not be for the next week? I figure for the first couple of days, she will pretty much want to lay low. After the first couple of days, I don’t know what to expect from her. Or maybe this is another “talk to your vet” situation. I especially like the idea of “baby onesies”. I could get a few of those at Walmart. Get busy (potty/poop) – Not an issue when she is healthy. Under the circumstances, how have you handled this? When it’s time for Julie and Sabu to get busy, I carry Julie to the door that’s connected to the garage. It has only one step that I know she can handle it. At almost 18 weeks (this Saturday), she is still not confident of going down the stairs (very confident going up the stairs) on her own because around a week or two after she came home, she tumbled down about three stairs. I’d think that it is OK to continue carrying her outdoors like I normally have. Sabu – It may be wise to kennel Sabu for at least two days while Julie is recovering. So, she has room for peace and quiet. MandiesMom: “While Julie is at the Vet, keep yourself super busy!!” My parents’ and I will “together” keep busy. This is a great idea. “And, you call that vet for updates as often as you want.” Another great idea. I’d be one of those thinking, “I really shouldn’t bother them.” For sure, I’ll be making a copy of this thread before I leave the house. It’ll make it easier to remember the recommendations that were given to me. Thank you VERY much. “Nervous” Starlette

| We put Kyra in a preemie onsie instead of a collar. It seemed more comfortable for her.

| Chloe just had hers done 2 weeks ago. She did great. I was a nervous wreck also. She didn't lick much. I'd tell her to stop and she would. The day of the surgery, she slept alot. I gave her pedialyte (orange) and boiled chicken. She wasn't interested in eating much. She was pretty uncomfortable. The vet gave me 4 days of pain pills to take at night. The next day she was pretty much back to herself. I just kept her from jumping and running. She never had problems with constipation (although I kept mineral oil on hand) I brought her home in a crate. Definitely call the vet to check on her. I called mine twice and they were super nice. I hope yours is the same. Please keep us posted. She will do fine, but I understand the worry. I too kept myself busy all day and it helped. Prayers going out to Julie, Tori, you, and your mom.

| Definitely, call today and ask the vet if they provide the recovery collars. My vet didn't (again, because they really are against them), but there are places you can go to get them..probably a pet store. Activity: The vet will tell you this, too. She needs to not be super active like running, jumping, horsing around. I'm not sure how shih tzu's are but that was an impossible task at my house for Mandie. I did my best, short of caging her the whole time, but she's a Yorkie..c'mon! As mentioned before, remember - no baths until the stitches come out. She should go potty just fine and the same as she has always gone. I would keep an eye on it though just to ensure she is able to poop. Again, constipation happened with Mandie due to the meds and I think it was painful for her to "push". My other pups that were spayed didn't have this issue though (a pom and a small/medium mix girl). It might just be because Yorkies are soooo tiny. I would definitely keep an eye on Julie's poop though and have that mineral oil ready - even feeding her fiber, like green beans could help.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | She didn't have the surgery today due to their discovery of anguinal hernia. I just watched the whole surgery on youtube. This vet cannot do the surgery. So, I'm going to Mom's other vet for an exam on Monday. That 's all to report for now. Starlette
