Scared about how big my puppy will be

Hi and Welcome to YorkieTalk! You will find a bunch of great information around here.

My first Yorkie, was also from Florida and was given to me when my stepdaughter went into the Army in 2001. I honestly did not know that the term "teacup" was not appropriate, and that is how I described her until I found out differently. She also cost a bunch of money and found out later she came from an extremely disreputable breeder and this breeder was later banned from breeding. Unfortunately she was way too small and had way too many health problems. My heart is still broken when I think of her.

I think if you stick around you will gain so much information. One thing I learned from YT, is that a healthy puppy is so much better than a small ill pup.

Anyway, please enjoy our community. There are so many great things here.

Im new also but i was one who wanted a small yorkie also so i searched for one that was older i found chloe she was 6 mts when I got her. she was everything I wanted. her ears were up her hair was very pretty and she was little. she weigh 2 pounds and 14 ounces today she is now 9 months old and weighs 3 pounds.. and let me tell i stay on pins and needles because of her size. for me I am always on guard even the vet says she needs to gain weight. unless you have nerves of steel .the littles are not always the best choice. Don't get me wrong I love her to death but shes a handle full.some yorkies can be veryyyyy hyper and Chloe is. when you see your fru baby leaping from the couch to the coffee table then to the recliner at only 3 lbs it is very scary. just wanted to give you my experience With a very little.

As others have said health is the first thing to be concerned with..but your puppy's weight sounds right on for a 3 month old pup..at this rate of growth you will most likely have a 5/6 lb baby which IMO is a very good size for a small dog.. welcome to YT

Even reputable breeders estimate the puppies adult size!!!!! There's nothing wrong with that for every closed minded person on here!!! The term teacup may not be AKC recognized but its a term used to describe small puppies and there is nothing wrong with that. AKC is nothing but a registry like thousand others and they are not the god of anything. Most of us have smaller Yorkies.

Yes that's how I bought my chihuahuas, Im definitely going to do that with my next yorkie. I just wanted to have the maximum bonding!! And you would of melted if you saw his little face lol

According to the AKC, yorkies should not exceed 7 pounds. There is no official category of them being "teacup", also all yorkies no matter what the size are in the Toy group. Yorkshire Terrier Page

There is no teacup group.

honestly most who use the term teacup sell babies that are not healthy...back yard breeders and if you have ever watch hoarders..the animal episode and see how those babies live you would better understand what people are trying to convey. they breed babies who are a smaller weight than should be bred and that in turn causes health/congenital issues for these wee lil ones....mix that with a breeder who is not putting the momma and babies health concerns/needs first and you end up in a very bad situation falling in love with a baby who is sick or worse doesnt make it thru their first year of life. you may see that term as ok but if you do some serious yt thread research it may just change how you see it....it did for me. i used to see that term as fine until i joined yt now i understand why it is not a good term to use. please dont think anyone means it in a negative light they are just very passionate about the babies and being sure they have someone to stand up for them because they cant speak for themselves. having a healthy baby is what is most important in the end is all i think they are trying to point out. if you paid 2000 for a baby and then another 10000 grand in medical issues and still lost that baby.....this really happens due to the greed of humans.

Hmmm I think you're the one being closed minded...the reputable breeders know their breeding stock & what's behind their lines up to many generations. Of course they know & can estimate the full grown puppy's size. Puppy Mills, Brokers/Resellers, Back Yard Breeders do not know their lines, most of the time, their estimates are way off. They're the ones using marketing terms like 'teacup, micro tiny, etc' to sell to unsuspecting new pet owners. I would say you've been had & you're mad & you're taking it out on the wrong people.

There is nothing wrong with estimating the size. You are right we all do.
BUT...there is something wrong with not see that AKC is the "cream of the crop" registration for dogs.

I don't understand how you could not be more upset about the breeder.. the health of your baby. You are more concerned with having a pup you can call teacup and the amount of money you have spent.

Its not close minded its a fact that is someone give you a guesstimate thats all it is is a guess. One of mine should have been 3 lbs according to the growth charts shes 71/2. The other one should have been 5 lbs and hes 14. All pups grow differently and even knowing the parents weight doesnt guarantee it because your pup may take after a dog further down in its ancestry line

And teacup is just a marketing term some breeders use to get more money for a pup
