I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() My little Joey has been extremely healthy, but I really took the time to find a good breeder because I just didn't want another sickly dog. I was afraid to even get a purebred dog at all thinking that all breeders only bred for profit. When a dog becomes one of the top 10 most popular dogs in the country, and I think Yorkies are number two, you will find that people are breeding them purely for profit and have no real interest in the breed. They just want to breed something that's easy to sell. Unfortunately, breeders like this, do no health testing and breed their pets without knowing anything about their line or even if their dogs have a genetic illness that just hasn't shown up. Others breed them knowing full well their dogs have a serious case of LP. So many people think going to a quality breeder will be too expensive, but it actually a great investment. Joey has had two emergencies, one was vomiting when he was young about 5 months, and they think a spider bite him. Another was an eye ulceration when he was around a year old, I was growing out this forehead hair and vet thought he rubbed his face on carpet. Since then, (knock on wood) no problems. Joey is 6 1/2.

| ![]() I do thank you all for taking the time to share your experiences and to address my question. I was hesitant to post but glad I did. Before YT I had no idea of the various issues with Yorkies and the dangers of puppy mill and BYB dogs. There is so much experience shared here and I for one was so grateful to have answers to health and other questions. When I talk to other dog parents they seem to know nothing of breeders, good food, training etc - never having had the knowledge that YT imparts. They just learn by bitter experience. I was so devastated by the loss of my first baby at 11.5 to kidney failure, I looked everywhere including here to try and find if I could have prevented the horrible and sudden disease. I now know there was not much I could do. Nancy is so right, it is so hard to find a Yorkie that has a good chance of living a healthy and full life, and we can only do our best research and choose an experienced breeder. However, they are lovely dogs and we love them no matter what. Thanks again. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | ![]() The four of mine are very healthy except the two who suffer from fall allergies. And we had one that had a fatty tissue tumor.

| ![]() Other than getting stung by a bee and a 2 day vomiting event, Mandie has been very healthy. I count my blessing daily with her and pray that it continues because I really have no idea of her history - genetically. I agree with others, we see more bad/issues just because of the nature of the forum. Most of us find YT from google searching answers to a medical issue (even if it ends up being minor). I know many say they google answers and YT comes up time and time again. That's great!!! ![]()

| ![]() I am happy to say that our Sophie is a very healthy and happy little girl who is full of energy. Every check up she has received a gold star from our vet whose comment about her was "you've got a quality dog here!" We are truly blessed! When I read about all the poor little sick ones my heart breaks for them and their people. I am glad so many have this forum to turn to for advice and support. ![]() ![]()

| ![]() Micah is the only one of mine that has ever had health issues all genetic, he has MVD, LP 1 and he had one testicles that was undescended...he came from a bad breeder in Germany..he was neutered at UT while being treated for the MVD, I am happy to say that he is four years old now and you wouldn't think that he ever had a bad day, he is a ball of Black & white energy ![]() My others are very happy and very healthy and never go to the vet except for routine cks & teeth cleaning.

| ![]() knock on wood at a little over 2 years of age Lola seems very healthy, however I keep waiting for the shoe to drop, not sure why, but perhaps it's all the sick and injured threads I read. Just for my peace of mind I have had complete blood work panels done on her 3 times so far, starting when i got her then at one year, then at 2 years, even my vet thinks I am crazy, I swear I am very tempted to ask for a full round of x rays and a complete body scan on our next visit, LOL I take better care of her than I do of myself.

| ![]() Bogie is 3 and has never had any health problems, he has only been for routing vet checks and other than an ear infection when we first adopted him and a lump on his back that was a slight infection he has no health issues at all. Jada has allergies and will itch and have loose stools and tummy issues if she eats something she is allergic to. She had a non cancerous tumor removed from her back last year and she has bad teeth. She has lost a total of 9 teeth so far and she is 6 years old. Bogie has yet to need a dental. Jada also has LP in both back knees. Overall though they are healthy.

| ![]() I have 4 Yorkies ages 2-4 and they have never been sick. They have their shots an annual exam every year. Very Blessed because I have also read about so many sick dogs here.

| ![]() Remy is healthy so far. I do know I will have to have lp surgery sometime, but that is ok I am prepared. I also have her teeth clean more often then my others because I am trying to be prevent her having major teeth issues latter on. I have blood work done to check on her health then. My other fur babies have some issues that are specific to their breed. My lasha has eye issues, my shih tzu has back issues, eye issues and skin allergies. With knowledge and care I hope to have them all healthy and to a ripe ole age!!! Yes, with more information and alternatives we have to take more responsiblity for our pet's health.. not like the old days when table scraps and a bed would do lol
