| Bobbing head, involuntary head movements Hi! My name is Gwen and my bow-wow-baby is Bella. I am new to yorkietalk. My 1yr-old Yorkie is five days post surgery for a bowel obstruction. She was doing well until yesterday morning when she had four 10-20 second periods of involuntary head movements. Thinking the condition a diabetic seizure, I immediately gave her honey (she has never had glucose issues). The head movements subsided. I drove her to my local veterinarian office where they performed bloodwork. Her glucose levels came back on the low range of normal, protein low. I took her home and about six hours later she began having multiple little cluster-like episodes of the same type head bobbing. I returned her to the ER where she had her surgery and they kept her overnight for observation. She did not repeat an episode under their care and was released this afternoon. Any idea what could cause this type behavior? She never loses consciousness, is alert, her eyes are bright and normal. The only things different in her life are: * She consumed some tuna salad a few days ago when some fell on the floor. * She has been acting as if she may have ear mites for the last couple days. * Our pest control service man came Saturday and sprayed inside the home. Any ideas as to what may have caused these episodes; And should I worry about future occurrences? |

| It almost sounds neurological, as if she is having little seizures - when her brain is misfiring due to inflammation or injury or, even low blood sugar. Why don't you get a neurological consult and see what they say? Maybe she had a little stroke during surgery or shortly thereafter. I'd see a neuro and go from there. It could be so many things, though. Acting like she has ear mites could be from a headache or swelling of the brain and I'm sure your vet checked for mites when you took her in.

| Hello and welcome to YT. I am not a vet, but I am wondering if she doesn't have some fluid in her ear/ears or an inner ear infection (with what you described her acting as if she has mites in her ears) and that could throw her equilibrium off balance like it does for us humans. Or the other things that come to mind are possible seizures, some other neurological issues or liver shunt issues. I would be talking to my vet until they figure out what is wrong. Good luck and I would definitely follow up with your vet.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I would suggest bile acid testing as what you describe is lice shunt symptoms which sometimes don't present until a dog is put under anesthesia.

| I appreciate the feedback. I had the chemical list provided by the exterminator-vet ruled out toxicity. (Liver enzymes are also fine.) I'll talk to my vet about neurological and bile testing tomorrow. Thanks, you guys. |

| Your description is identical to episodes Max used to have. After thorough evaluation, including bloodwork, an MRI and spinal tap he was diagnosed with idiopathic head bobbing/idiopathic epilepsy. I think you should visit a neurologist. Please keep us posted.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | One of mine had neurological symptoms that we later determined were from lawn fertilizer. My other 2 had no problems with it. She was fine after 24 hours. So maybe she is sensitive to the chemicals used by the pest control even though they are not considered toxic. I hope she makes a full recovery.
