| What could cause hair loss on the muzzle? I was wondering if anyone knew what could be causing this or if it´s normal. Milo will be ayear old on the 21st of this month and he weighs 3.8lbs.As a small puppy,he had quite a thick coat which has slowly started to change. As he has grown, his coat has got a little thinner, longer,it´s silky and very managable, but the hair on the bridge of his muzzle and the edge of his ears is so short that its basiclly non exsistant. I havent cut it,he doesnt scratch there, and there is nothing wrong with the skin,it´s just gone, and I dont know what to think. Here he is at 6 months old: http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps22e03166.jpg As you can see,he has a nice parting of fur down his muzzle and on his ears. And here he is now at almost a year old: http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4fe9a461.jpg http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb104222a.jpg The hair on the rest of his body is VERY long,it almost reaches the floor,so I am lost as to why it has fallen out in that one area. Also, the hair in that area and the edges of his ears is tan,and it´s in those areas that the hair is short..like less than half an inch. What´s up with that? Is he changing his coat? Is there something wrong? Should I be worried? This is a picture of the rest of his coat from behind: http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps25592131.jpg

| I hope someone has some answers... I always alert up when I read threads about hair loss because I worry about blue borns (which obviously Milo isn't). I'm sure there is an explanation!! He looks to me like he does have some allergies.... From his eyes... Bevos eyes get "red" when his allergies get bad... Maybe Milo does too and this is affecting his hair?? I don't know but I hope you get some answers!! Hugs!

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | My 1st thought is what does your vet think? Curious too if Milo is full Yorkie or could he have a mix that would alter how his facial hair "came in" as an adult? Of course, puppy hair is fluffier so that may just be the answer. I'd double check with my vet to be sure there's no underlying medical issues then I'd just love him! He's adorable

Yorkies are known for having coats that change in color & texture for up to 3 years so I'd relax & love him oodles. I didn't mean to sound like I doubted his lineage, it's just that here on YT we have mixes (that're just as loved as the full breeds).

| His coat probably is just changing, but I'd still be looking into possible allergies (foodwise maybe). What do you feed him?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The top third of the ear is usually shaved, so I'm not sure your dog has any less hair than normal. Silky coats tend to have thinner hair then cotton coats. The bridge of the nose concerns me, and you could have the vet do a skin scraping to be sure that there are no mites, but it could be just hereditary, have you spoken to his breeder? I don't think it's diet related, he has fabulous hair elsewhere. Personally, I think he's beautiful. I would just trim up the ears!

His breeder has never had coat issues with her 2 yorkies. They have fabulous coats, and Milos is just like his dads.Infact,he´s is a spitting image of his dad..big long ears, same colour coat etc lol. The hair isnt gone (I think I explained myself terribly due to being in a rush),its just VERY short and thin in that area.On his muzzle (the bridge) I can see through to the skin. It´s only about an inch, but it makes me worry. It´s really frustrating for me because the rest of his coat is amazing and I am a worry wart..especially when it comes to the kids and my fur babys

| Oh..just thought I´d add (incase its relevant) that we have 2 yorkies.Milo & Bella from the same litter.Bella is fine. They do EVERYTHING together,so if he had mites or ringworm etc, she´d have it too right? :/

| I do not know why the hair on his muzzle would do that. However, he is just about a year old, and their coats take up to 3 (or more) years to mature. Your vet says not to worry...but you do...so would I. However... I got Brody at 14 months old, and he had a fairly long top knot. His color was changing, then one day I noticed golden tan starting to come in at the roots of his hair...such a lovely 'glow' to his face. A few months later, as the color was changing to the lovely golden tan, I came home from work and his top knot was gone... The ends were a different texture...fuzzier...and darker golden tan. I had not done anything different, but, of course, I figured I had done something wrong to cause it. Oddly, the silver colored strands that had not changed to tan yet did not 'fray' and break off, and the hair that broke off, well, I have no idea where it went...there was no 'clump' of hair anywhere that we could find. Several months later, a breeder friend sent a photo because one of her girls had her top knot vanish......but she still retained her long dark silky coat elsewhere on her body. Her top knot looked just like Brody's had, so I told her of my experience. In both cases, it seems to have just been a coat change...just seemed so sudden...abrupt...to both of us. Brody now has a lovely top knot. The color is a beautiful light golden tan in between the first 'transition' color (platinum blond) from the black and the darker golden tan that 'frayed' and 'dropped' off. I have no idea what the answer is, but I suppose it could be something along the lines of what happened to Brody and my friend's dogs' top knots, and it may re-grow, given time, too. I am including 4 pix: Brody, just before we got him...they had him puppy cut after this was taken...it is a 'bad' print I scanned back into the computer on 5/11/11...lol I would have asked them to leave him in full coat if I had known they were going to puppy cut him the day I picked him up...especially since they never had his ears trimmed, which I would have have the groomer do on every visit...and they took him monthly. Brody, on 5/22/11...we got him on 5/14/11. Brody on 10/27/11...note the 'platinum blond' top knot with silver strands and a lot of silver coming out of the top of the band. Brody (blue hoodie) with Mia (red hoodie hidden behind her all golden hair) after a 'dirt and weed expedition' on 11/25/12...note the difference in facial hair color between the 10/27/11 and 11/25/12 pix, and that his top knot has grown back out quite a bit. I, unfortunately, did not think to take a photo of the breakage, but he did not need a band for several months except for the few remaining straggler silver hairs, which eventually broke off as well.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think I've read that that's not always the case, one dogs resistence can be lower and it will get them while the other dog has a higher resistence and fights them off. Although if one had mites, I would always want to check the second.

I absolutely agree. They are individuals even though they are siblings. Something like parasites, though, mites, worms, fleas, lice, ticks, etc., if one is exposed, so, likely, is the other...even if both do not end up with the parasites and I'd want both checked so they didn't just pass them back and forth at the least.

| I had 2 yorkies one got mites the other didnt. I am not necessarily saying it is mites because when they have them they are usually in more than one area but with thinning hair a vet should do a skin scrape to check for it in case

| Laddy's hair stays short around the muzzle now too and I think he bites it off. His ears though are like yours and only need trimming every 3 or 4 months. He came from a bad place so have always wondered if he might have some silky in him.
