Yorkie Talker | Opinions please:) Hello fellow yorkie lovers of the world, just looking for some opinions here. My baby boy is a little over a year, AKC registered, and I was thinking about possibly studing him out, just once. What are the risks, can anyone tell me how I would go about finding the right person to stud him out, does anyone have any experience with doing this with their own yorkie? I havent really decided for sure it was just a thought, and i was not going to do it to try to make a profit, was only going to try to get one baby from it! Opinions and advice please? |

| Using him has a stud even once can cause his to mark all over you house. Is he an excellent example of the breed? Do you know his lines to know he doesn't have an illnesses or something such as luxating patella in his lines? You will need to do genetic and health testing on him. Personally I would just get him fixed and then when hes all healed from surgery get a puppy from a reputable breeder.

| Is he a near perfect specimen of the breed ? Are his parents show dogs ? Has he been genetically tested for any congenital defects that he could pass on to his pups ?if the answer to these questions is no then you need to neuter him & forget about breeding him. I am NOT a breeder BUT have had a YT with a congenital defect & can tell you that it was not fun for my dog or myself. Keep in mind that just because your dog appears to be fine & healthy on the outside, does not mean he is on the inside. |

| You might want to look at the YTCA.org for a breeder. Spring is the prefect time in my opinion because the weather is great for walks and potty training.

| I want to throw one more little thing out there that no one ever thinks of....if his pedigree and the pedigree of the female both have the same recessive gene for..........say, liver shunt......you are going to have quite possibly, a litter with at least one baby with liver shunt. Lets say worse case scenerio and you stud your baby out to some one that is totally clueless about not giving any medicatioons or chemicals while the momma is pregnant....and all the babies are born with cleft palates and die....you KNOW it is going to be the studs fault!!!! You will have to defend your stud, return the stud fee paid,......a whole bunch of stress and trouble and law suits and lawyers and headaches you really do NOT want to get into! Just one more facet of the issue that people just do not know about! |

| You've got some great advice, tips, and important questions to answer when considering breeding (whether you have a male or a female). Yorkiemom1 is a breeder of impecable (spelling?) standards and with love for every parent and baby pup that graces her home. I just wanted to let you know that you asking the question before acting shows how smart you are and how much you obviously love your little Yorkie boy. With that said, please keep us posted on your baby search this Spring. We love babies and pics...don't you dare forget pics when you find the right one!

Yorkie Talker | Also, thanks everyone for the great tips and advice, i love yorkie talk, and i love that i get great replies so quickly. Its good to know there are other people out there that share my love of yorkies, and dogs in general! my husbands friend always jokes with me saying when im old i wont be the crazy cat lady, i will be the crazy dog lady, but to me a life is not a fullfilling one without dogs |

| So happy to see you have changed your mind on studding your boy and will be looking for a new puppy instead. There are so many risk with studding, it can change the temperment of your loving boy, and lead to marking everything, also there are STD's to worry about. This is just one more reason to do testing of both male & female. Good luck in your search for a new baby, it's always so much fun finding a new baby and just enjoying watching them grow.

| It really takes a lot of knowledge about the breed and genetics to breed purebred dogs. It is so complex. Purebreds carry a large gene pool and when people just put one cute dog with another cute dog they many times do not realize the recipe for disaster they may be creating. If you are seriously thinking of breeding please consider finding a very experienced show/breeder that has an established and successful line of dogs to teach you what you need to know. There are already too many genetically damaged Yorkies out there that have caused great heart break to the owners. |
