| Sick Dog... Hi Yt, my name is JC and my wifes name is katie, we just purchased a dog from miami and on its way to lax it got a cold, its been coughing all night and hardly let us sleep. I guess due to the weather changes it got sick. I spoke with the breeder and he told us to give him 1 teaspoon of robitussin for kids. Does this sound right or should i go to petco and look for the right medicine? |

| If it were my puppy I would take it to the vet so Kennel Cough could be ruled out. It is very common with pups and can only be treated with Meds. Pups tend to hang on to Kennel Cough for a long timeso its best to be treated as soon as possible.

| I wouldn't do it! I don't know what the proper dose of Robitussin would be for a child but imagine a child would be 30-50 lbs and I'm sure that is at least 10-20 times bigger than your puppy Call the vet.

| 2 Reasons to go to the vet: 1. Your puppy easily could have kennel cough - only meds will cure 2. Your sales agreement with your breeder might specify that you have to have a vet check the pup over within so many hours/days etc. Also your vet can give you a clean bill of health on your new addition. These little ones are very fragile and will go down quickly. I know there is a thread on YT that talked about if your dog can catch a cold. Good Luck!

| Thank you for all the responses, the dog is due for its last vaccinations in 10 days, should i wait 10 days to take the dog, or should i take it in right now? It was last checked by the vet on Dec 14, 2005. Vet said it was perfectly fine. |

| The weather outside being cold does NOT cause a cold. VIRUSES cause colds! Definitely bring this little guy to the vet immediately. I'm sorry you received a sick puppy. This is one of the reasons I try to discourage people from not meeting a dog before you buy it. This dog will probably need antibiotics and who knows what else might be wrong with it. Try to get into a vet ASAP. If the dog is coughing all the time like that, hour on the hour then there is a STRONG possibility it is in his lungs (phenomena). I have had it myself and you'll be surprised how quickly it goes from coughing a lot to not being able to breathe. If you can't make an appointment TODAY. Listen for wheezing and if he is still constantly coughing consider calling the emergency vet. PLEASE keep us posted on the little guy! He's really a cute, big guy. How old is he? |

| Also, keep the dog AWAY from other dogs right now. You do not want them to catch the cold. Kennel cough will take a long time to get rid of. Did you bring the dog to this vet or did the breeder? I would want answers from my vet, not the breeder's vet. |

| I wouldnt delay in getting him in to the vet either. It could quickly turn to pneumonia and then he would be on IV's at an emergency center.

| Thank you cheryl, as last stated the dog was checked 3 days ago by the breeders vet and said he was fine. I can scan the health certificate so you guys can tell me if hes sick or not, cause i have no idea what half of the things there are. The dog has also been given the flu shot, so it must be a cold or some other problem. |

| I wouldn't go with the children's meds either. In that case you are only treating 1 symptom of the virus, the coughing. If she is coughing to try to clear her lungs, then it can make her sickr. She could also have a fever. I don't recommend meds for people unless it is recommended by a vet. Most of the time a vet will give you an antibiotic for a dog. Dogs can also cough from worms, but it wouldn't be as frequent as what you speak of. |

| I suggest you go visit the vet as well. Though the vet visit a couple of days ago says he's fine, this might be something that just recently surfaced that they did not see before. Please take it to the vet.
