| Barking to get attention Hello everyone! I have a - almost - 5 months old yorkie puppy. She is very obedient, and calm. The only problem is that she started barking to get our attention. She sleeps either in my room or my mom's and in the morning, she barks to wake us up. When we ignore she cries and then stop. But, this behaviour continues everyday. Also, she barks when i'm in the computer, therefore, ignoring her. So, should we ignore the behaviour or punish her immediately? (i use the Dog Whisperer Technique to say "shhh" and quickly touch her with the fingers) |

| We have an 8-month old female Yorkie who does the same thing, only when we are trying to watch a movie or something on TV. I would love to hear any suggestions. This is my first experience owning a dog, so I'm not sure what is "normal" or not. |

| I think you just need to be in tune with your dog and know if it's just a bark for attention or if it's a bark because of needing something. Mandie wakes me up with a bark in the morning because she has to go potty. Sometimes at the computer, she just wants attention so she barks. I don't get onto her though..I just pick her up and put her on the desk in front of me (I'm an old desktop computer user..no laptop or tablet here lol). I figure that if she's barking for attention, I should give it to her. I mean, I am gone all day at work..she needs some attention and loving. (so does her mommy )

| Well when she barks how do you know she is not trying to tell you she needs to go potty? Most dogs bark in the morning to say hey wake up I need to go potty.

| What I did with Joel when he was a puppy was EVERYTIME he barked I took him potty. In the beginning it was a lot of taking him out, but he learned it fast, and it taught him not to bark and potty trained him at the same time. Now he's 1 and never barks unless he needs something |

| Thanks for the replies, i've never imagined about taking her to potty! Sometimes she goes into the right place and others, not. I'll try the same here, ilovejoel! We always hug and give love to her, i work at home and we have a lot time togheter. I'll try taking her to the potty area when she barks in the computer time too, right? After Joel caught on, when he would still bark for attention I would say "oh, you need to potty?" And I swear he would roll his eyes and go lay down, lol because he knew I was just going to take him potty. Then when she gets the hang of it she'll learn to bark for things she NEEDS instead of just because your on the computer or something. At least thats how it worked for Joel Last edited by ilovejoel; 12-15-2012 at 02:26 PM. | |

| lol x 2 with the joel's behaviour... Thanks, ilovejoel! I trained her with the punish technique at the morning(she didn't bark today) and now, i'll do the potty tech(i didn't had a fixed potty area). I'm training her to catch trown toys and she seems even better. Thats the first time i had a dog and i'm loving it! |

| I have 2 boys, they are 7 years old. One of them developed this habit lately in the last 3 months maybe that its been prominent to me. I have tried telling him to stop and ignoring him, but hes getting worse. So someone recommended I put him in another room away from me when Im talking. I started gating him in the living room where he can sit on the back of the chair and see me but hes not near me. It quiets him right down. Ive been doing it every time he starts for only the past 5 days and he seems to be getting the hint. This behavior is unacceptable. Period. Luckily hes catching on quickly. Good Luck to you!

| Yorkies are very vocal and expressive dogs. I swear mine thinks she can talk! I would think your dog may need to go potty or is hungry in the morning. Most kids are. Some dogs may whine when they need something but a Yorkie will bark or make various sounds in the throat to let you know they need something. They are lap dogs and do want to cuddle a lot. They also can get cold very easily so many times they are seeking some warmth from their human. They really think they are a member of the family so may expect to be treated that way. Since they are very energetic dogs they need a lot of exercise. Keeping them exercised will help divert some of that energy. |
