All dogs, including your sweet pup, deserve a good life. Your pup's dam and sire deserve a good life, too, but their life in a puppy mill is horrible. They'll be bred over and over and when they can no longer produce, they'll be killed, tossed away like trash. When you buy from a puppy mill, then they have the money to keep going. See what the parents of your pup are going through:

Hello and welcome to Yorkie Talk. Your question: 'Why shouldn't I buy a puppy from a pet store?' Is a really good question. We will be glad to educate you, and try to convince you why buying puppies and kittens from a pet store is a bad thing.
I am happy you got your precious Lully. We love pictures, so please post some soon. I am sure you will be a wonderful Yorkie parent. I can tell you are tender hearted and love your little girl.
The sad part is your darling girl probably came from a Puppy Mill. A Puppy Mill is a place that is breeding dogs strictly for profit. Many Puppy Mills are located in rural areas all over the USA. The breeding dogs live in horrific conditions. Often in small wire cages stacked on top of each other where urine and feces fall onto the dog below. I have personally seen and been involved in caring for dogs rescued from a PuppyMill. I don't want to shock you but what I am telling you is the truth. The females were all under weight, many were in constant pain with rotting teeth, untreated ear, eye or other infections. Coat were matted some even had live maggots living on the filth. May of the dogs were deformed from standing on wire, splayed toes, even missing toes or infected pads. When females no longer produce pups they are killed. The dogs are emotionally scared for life. Once a person sees the horror of a puppy mill, they never think it is ok for pet store to support this awful breeding for profit operation .
You have already met some of our members on this site and they have given you some good links and advice, we are very supportive of each other here and so glad you found us.

I don't agree wit buying pet store puppies, not because the puppies come from puppy mills, but because they MIGHT come from puppy mills.
The fact is smaller pet stores do get puppies from people while not exactly reputable, are not producing defective degenerate dogs. A number of the smaller pet stores are buying puppies either from their own breeders, or from people that brought the puppies in to them.
I know this, because I have seen it happen in several small stores over the years. Not that it makes it OK. If they're not testing their dogs for genetic issues and so forth, the only thing they have over the puppy mill puppies is that they were born and raised in the house.. maybe.

I do think though, some people get hysterical over the situation. Let's be frank here. If this is a money endeavor to some, don't you think they would eek out every last penny they can? And after the bitches stop producing, and the studs go sterile from brucellosis.. don't you think they would try to get one more dollar and sell the dogs themselves?
I know for a fact that there are shelters that go the dog auctions and buy out the unwanted brood stock. I also know for a fact that in some areas, spay/neuter is so effective, that shelters have taken to importing dogs from other areas of the nation, and also from OUTSIDE of the nation to supply the demand for dogs, and one type of dog is always in demand in certain areas... Small dogs.

Yes, some of the parents of these dogs are killed by various means. Sadly, it is legal for these people to shoot their own dogs. At least it is in PA (east coast puppy mill center of the USA). And that's considered an acceptable form of euthanasia. But again, I feel if people think about it, it profits these people more to sell even their burnt out brood stock.

Not that I am for puppy milling, I think it's horrible, but I think that people should just try to be a bit rational when it comes to this very emotional subject. Puppies that come from puppy mills are not bred or born into the best conditions. This is not to say they are all genetically defective dogs, it's just that someone paid a premium price for an inferior product.
Pet stores do not want to sell you unhealthy puppies, puppy mills do not want to sell unhealthy puppies. This cuts into the profit margin of all the people involved. YES it happens, and it's terrible. Sometimes it happens with such frequency with stock from a particular supplier or a particular store enough to draw media and legal attention.
But on the whole thousands of people buy thousands of puppies from thousands of pet stores throughout the country, and the number of them with complaints about the conditions of their puppies are miniscule compared to the numbers being sold.

I wish you luck with your puppy, I hope that she stays healthy and happy. Please do your research and learn what you need to learn to help keep her healthy, particularly about liver shunt.
Don't feel bad that you bought your puppy where you did. It happens. Just move on from it, love your puppy, and maybe next time, you'll buy from a legitimate source.

Ellen, every new poster's posts have to be "ok'd" by the forum before posting..up until the 10th. I see you are at the 10th so you should be able to post in real time now. I remember when I first started that I was frustrated with that, too, because I was trying to reply to people and it just looked like I wasn't thanking them or I was out of sequence. We all know this so don't worry.

Bottom line is this - you did nothing wrong. If you don't have knowledge of something, you can only act on what you have knowledge on. Before researching and learning of the issues at hand, I would have done the EXACT same thing. I completely understand your reasoning, too. It really just comes down to the fact that we all act on our knowledge and beliefs AS WE ACQUIRE THEM.

You have this information now..as I do. I am sure it will guide your choices in the future as the information you had BEFORE today guided your choices.

Lully is ADORABLE!!! You have a great baby! Please know that we are so happy you and Lully are here. And we love you both

Ellen, As you mentioned you didn't know many of us including myself had no idea. My dog Sophie Kate is also a Puppy Mill dog (some may call her a Back Yard Breeder). The kennel owner insists she is not a Puppy Mill or a Back Yard Breeder (yes I tracked the owner down and spoke with her, nice lady but we have different opinions on how a dog should be raised).

Many YT members have strong opinions of Puppy Mills because we have seen the results when in some of the cases the puppies are not in the best health. My advice to you is be very honest with your Vet on where you got your dog, if your Vet is like my Vet she will give you a lecture but in the long run it will benefit your dog.

The best remedy is educate yourself on what to look for with a good breeder if you ever decide to add to your family.

For now love your little baby, learn all you can about the Yorkie Breed and keep coming back to YorkieTalk. We are a nice group of people who will offer your friendship and support.

Remember we are not mad at you for where you got your Yorkie, in most cases we are just upset over the fact that Pet Stores enable Puppy Mills to exsist.

Welcome to YT. I know it may seem harsh the responses you get here about this but its only because people really care. I was one of those who thought I was saving my first yorkie and we love him dearly but he came from a puppy mill. I also was one of those who thought oh it would be nice to be a breeder since I had just retired and needed a "hobby". Thank God I found YT!!! I look back at my older posts and I am so very thankful to those here who educated me on all of these things. It is deplorable here in Missouri the puppy mills that exist so that these places can make money and then after these little ones are born they are shipped in closed in trailers to these pet stores in which many of them die before they ever reach these stores. I hope that you like me will be able to understand before long why we are all so passionate about this here.

MandiesMom- thank u so much for explaining me why my 10th post didnt go through, i thought maybe i was in trouble questioning about pet store lol.

On my 10th post i was explaining why i got my baby from a pet store, is just that as a new mommy i thought it was safer for me to get her from there as they told me that if i had any problem i could call them, they gave me numbers of emergency calls, she came with a microchip, with 3 free vet offices visit, and other really good things that made me think it would be good for me, i just didnt want to get my puppy and not know what to do with it, so i felt safe that way!!! But seeing your posts and picture of puppys mills owww horrible thing, i didnt know, i dont know if mine comes from there, but they gave me the name of her breeder!! But yeah after i learn more and read more i am pretty sure i will make better decisions in the future!!!! Thankx guys

Here is a picture of my baby

Pet store pups come from puppy mills and if for some reason one didn't it is from a bad breeder because all good breeders want to know where there pups are going. When you buy a pup you are supporting and keeping in business the puppy mills that keep the parent dogs is cages to small to move in that are covered in poo, rarely fed, never groomed, kept outside, and just no cared about. They do not do health testing, they inbreed, they don't care about what is best for the breed and they are just horrible. Google puppy mills and watch the videos. Slowly these places are going out of business so we just need to keep letting people know about them so they stop buying and supporting the horrible treatment of puppy mill dogs. One person does make a difference.

There is no reason to lol about this it is terrible. Pups will always find a home you should look at pictures of the dogs who are at the puppy mill.

Some cities have banned the sale of puppies/kittens from pet stores. Mississauga, Ontario our closest city west of Toronto, has done this.

The law passed because of rigorous political action, and investigative actions, that show to a huge extent puppies were being brought in from substandard breeders. This could be an actual high volumne kennel, or from "local breeders" who do not do one thing to insure they a) are breeding healthy dogs and b) that their pups are healthy and well cared for.

If you are a CKC breeder here in Canada, it is against our ethics to sell to pet stores, to breed mix breed dogs, to offer a puppy/dog up for raffle.

If you are going to pay the premium price of a purebred, then buy from a breeder who spends their life, breeding for the betterment of the breed. Buy from those breeders who do the most health screenings on their breeding dogs, and research their lines. That stand behind their owners for the lifetime of their pups. Buy from a breeder who evaluates their dogs, through conformation shows, who works with their dogs in any one of the various performance sports, who supports rescue, who is a member of their breed club.

I will say if we are successful in banning puppy sales for all pet stores, the market will still be present for puppies. And then what happens?

I want to apologize if I was to harsh. I have an extreme hatred of puppy mills. The love of my life Callie Mae (my yorkie) is from a puppy mill before I knew better. I would never ever trade her for anything. But because the puppy mill did not care if her parents had Luxating Patella my baby had had surgery on one knee that cost over $3,000 and will have to have the same surgery on the other one. Its not the money that bothers me its the pain she has from the LP and from the surgery that bothers me. Many of us on here who didn't know better and got a puppy mill pup have had many problems with them. The puppy mill owners just don't care and many many puppies are born sick or with illnesses that cost the owner thousands of dollars and sometimes the pups don't even make it. There are lucky ones who get perfectly healthy pups and I hope you are one. Many of these puppy mill owners will not pay for medical care so they will do c-sections on there own and such with out any medical training and with out putting the dog to sleep while they do it. A lot of these puppy mill owners will also debark there breeding dogs in terrible ways. Here is a website with some info http://www.aspca.org/Fight-Animal-Cr...puppy-mill-faq

Buying isn't rescuing.

Unsold pet store pups will likely make it to rescue if unpurchased...my Scoobers came from a pupmill, I adopted him from the pound.

For every 1 pupmill puppy sold 3 will die in the mill...

Does that change the way you view the doggy in the window?
