Cotton Coated Yorkshire terrier?

My little 7mo old Chewy (profile pic) is a cotton coated chocolate baby. His hair is a nightmare to brush and wash? It is so thick and wavy. It takes forever to get his hair wet when we bath him, because it is sooo thick. My late Hugo was cotton coated as well, he had thick curly silky hair. I miss my little guy

Awwww, your little Kyra looks just like My Chloe!! She is 7 years old has a black coat just like with long flowing hair. Sooo cute!!

That they do and I think it helps keep their hair more manageable. Less tangles to have to deal with too.

After this last litter I honestly think that you can tell with pups are going to be a silky coat or a cotton coat. My daughter and I saw a noticeable difference in their coat even at a week old. I just never noticed it before cuz both of the parents (Miah & Quincy) had a silky coat.

We actually picked Winston because of his darker hair, my first Yorkie, Spencer also had a beautiful black coat, but his was softer than Winston's.
Is it possible to have half and half? I ask because of Winston's unruly back end...even in his avatar picture you can tell where it goes from smooth to fluffy.

Haha! It takes for days to get Dexter's hair wet in the bath, too! The cotton coat hair is ridiculously hard to take care of, but I think it is worth it because of how cute it is

It is possible to have a combination coat, called a modified silk, and my 2 girls both have modified silk coats. Both have duller, fluffier, cottony back ends. I use a flea comb to strip out the cotton in the coat, leaving behind all the shiny, silky fur. Their hair mats less than cotton coats, but more than silk. It's also less shiny than a silk coat, but much shinier than a cotton coat.

Just from the photo alone I would say that your pup is a cotton coat.

The difference between the pups at this age (2 wks old) is the shine and texture factor. Four of the six are very shinny and have a thinner coat than the other two. The two that I believe to be cotton coats, the coat is thicker, less shinny and feels a bit stiffer.

(Call me nutz, but thats my opinion and I 'm stickin to it)

I do hope you are right. I didn't actually realize there was such a thing until I started questioning when he would "change" and I've said since we got him I wish he'd stay with this puppy coat... Any idea of what age I can stop waiting for it to turn?

Oh my gosh your 2 are cuter than heck...I may try your technique with the flea comb and see if I can rid Winston of his fluff butt. Thanks for the suggestion, my groomer may thank you too...

That is what I think Kyra's coat is also.

Absolutely, 100% yes, Kyra's coat is also a modified silk. It looks identical to my girls. I can compare because my Lucy had a pure cotton coat, so I do know the difference. Kyra, is adorable, by the way. It seems we both have teeny tinies.

As you brush Winston's hair (with the flea comb) you will actually be removing the cotton. The more you strip out, the shinier you will see his coat get. The silk that's left behind does not mat very easily. Although I brush them daily, I bathe the girls, and strip their coats once a week to keep them mat free. By the way, stripping doesn't hurt, unless you accidentally pull on a knot. It's just like regular combing. I'd really be interested to hear if it works for Winston, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it does help tame that cute, fluffy, little butt.
