| Will a 7 yr old yorkie adapt to a pup? Hi Everyone! I have a 7 year old yorkie female named Hershey. We almost lost her a month ago from complete kidney failure (she must have gotten into something outside that we were unaware of). It was a close one and I couldn't believe how devastated I was about almost losing her. Anyway, it made me realize that I want another one! I had bred her 5 years ago. My mom has one of the pups and so does my sister. Hershey is used to being around them, but I'm not sure how she would be with a new puppy? I have a close family and we get together often - so it would affect the other dogs as well. Is it wise to bring a puppy into the mix? Hershey is 7 1/2 pounds. I'm thinking of getting a 4-5 pound male. Would that be a problem? I want another one so bad but my fear is she will get jealous and won't accept the pup into our home. What do you all think? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Hershey's adorable, quite the diva isn't she? Love your avatar! Joey got along with all the puppies he's ever met, not so much with older dogs, he's very standoffish with some, others he loves right away, but every puppy he’s met, he’s been in love, so I wouldn’t worry if I were you. Just don't forget to give her the attention she's use to.

| It is up to you if you want to try it or not she may or may not accept a new pup. Your chances I would think are greater that she would accept the pup since shes around other dogs but theres also the other factor that sometimes pups can sometimes be annoying to an older dog. Mine are 8 and I wouldnt do it because I wouldnt want to take the chance of upsetting my dogs I have 2 and they can already be competitive for attention so I know I wont be getting another one untill they pass on. Thats me though and not you so your just going to have to think hard on it and make a decision and go with it and make the best of it

Also, I think the mistake many make is reprimanding the older dog, when the puppy is the one with razor sharp teeth and can usually take care of itself.

| That's what I worry about....her being 7 1/2 and set in her ways. I'm not sure if a pup would be too much change for her. And even if I can return the pup....how hard would that be!!!!! |

| Nancy - that's good to know that your breeder suggested a pup! How would you suggest her having her own space? |

| I think it all depends on your dog. My two are constantly around other dogs, so I know they would accept another dog (and they have accepted several fosters). I would go with your gut. Maybe you could do a test run to decide? I know it would be hard to return a pup... So don't know if that's even an option.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | For example, Joey can climb some steps and get on the bed, and a puppy can't do that. Also, most people keep their puppy in a pen when they can watch them, so that allows the adult, time to himself.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I agree, but I think you can increase the odds of them getting along if you do certain things. Your two probably are bonded to each other so tight, they might not want a newcomer to come into their group.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | I think one of the best predictors is having a dog, that is well socialized with other dogs. We do hope within the next year to add a puppy to our crew. Magic will be 7yrs old and Razzle 4 and a bit by then. One thing you could try is babysitting your family's dog(s) for a weekend and see how everyone does.

| The three of them actually spend a lot of time together. We have a family cottage so they "live" together all summer. They're used to each other...not sure about a pup. I'm so anxious about this. I want another so bad. Based on Hershey's personality - I think she would be fine. My sisters' dog is the party animal, in your face, I want attention yorkie. My mom's is the prissy, let me sit on your lap yorkie and Hershey is in the middle. So I think that's good right? |
