| Older Yorkie Hello all! I'm new here. My Yorkie (Harley) can no longer (or won't try) walk up stairs. He will be 14 the end of October. I know age is a factor, but he gets around so well in the house, yet the stairs issue has me baffled. Does anyone have/had an older yorkie with a similar issue? I'm going to take him to the vet this week, but I was just curious if anyone has experienced this? I hate that he is going through this |

| I recently lost my first yorkie, Dixie, at age 16. When she was around 14 she quit going up and down the steps we had for the dogs to get on the couch and bed. We would just pick her up and put her on the bed at night. She would make a cute little woofing sound if she needed down to use the bathroom. My Shorty, who is almost 13, will not go up and down the steps either, but he is fat with short little legs. He was never much of a climber. How is the vision on your little boy? Dixie's vision started getting bad when she was around 14 so I think that attributed to some of her reluctance of going up and down stairs.

| I know it is puzzeling when our Yorkies stop doing things, they have always done. I suggest a vet visit to check out eye sight, hips and so on. Noah (RIP) stopped doing stairs when he was about 15 years old. He had arthritis and it was painful for him. We put a ramp off the screen porch doggy door and that helped a lot.

| Pao is only 6 and he refused to do stairs after he slipped once. My stairs is hardwood. I just carry him up and down. He'll asked to be carried if he wants to go upstairs or downstairs to look for one of his toys. It is a pain but I'd rather carry him then have him slip or fall again.

| It is more than likely the knees. As the dog gets older the connective tissue in the knees wears off. It gets very painful to bend the joint to go up and down stairs. Sometimes going down can be worse than going up because of the angel of the bone as it rubs in the joint in that position. Do your little guy a favor and carry him up and down the stairs. He has given you a lot of years. It's the least you can do for him at this point. |

| I am a passionate believer in Cosequin, and a recent convert to Dasuquin with MSM....this stuff is fabulous for seniors and can take an old man that has slowed to a bare walk, and put pep in his step! But like someone said, it could be a fear of going up and down the stairs, for reasons mentioned.... |
