Poor little squirrel! He was a lucky thing. They are bad about standing in the road here. I will honk my horn at them. It scares the crap out of them but at least it gets them off the road.

I was a city girl.I hate mice and rats. (rats the size of cats) well we get mice in the house and my DBF is in charge of disposing of the bodies. I can't look at them. I feel so bad that they are dead lol

yes he was very lucky this road is a 2 lane and one of the main roads here its a small town, not to mention people drive to fast for this road, animals roam everywhere, I befriended a stray tomcat last year he was sooo skinny and i could tell by his bottom jaw he had been hit, I took him to the vet to get his shots and asked about the jaw and i was right, it was a old wound he didn't get his shots he had to be put on antibotics first he had infection and fever he was about yr old at the time i first brought him, which was last year, 2nd time he had upper respatory infection so he had to be put on antibotics again, I feed him he is gaining weight now but its hard to for me to get him back to the vet because never know when he will show up, ive gotten attached to him he is a brown/greyish tabby with huge paws. I buy him can catfood he prefers it over dry i give him salmon when have salmon, or buy him sardines in water, not to mention he likes for me to rub his tummy.. sorry for the long post lol.. oh and i forgot bout the ducks mallards they even stopped traffic they wouldnt fly because they had babies they would come here we would feed them, they just showed up out of the blue, later on after the babies are grown I did see where some had been hit and killed, not sure what happend to the rest of them hopefully they found a pond to live out there lives...

Don't feel bad. Shooting it in the head would instantly stop its suffering - not pretty but it would be a kindness under the circumstances. I've heard that men in war did that for men terribly injured beyond all help, often after being asked to by the injured one. I pray he went ahead & passed relatively quickly. You know I hate creepy/crawlies but I can't stand to see one suffer.

Awwww that is great you took the poor cat in. So many people dump them off around here. It is so sad. Every cat I have ever owned has been dumped off on me. The last one I took in is still alive and she is about 18 years old.

I am horrible about this kind of thing. In fact, I stop for turtles crossing the road and put earthworms back in the grass.

I hit a squirrel one time and cried for the rest of the day. It's funny that I could work in a hospital just fine but can't handle injured animals.

Breaks my heart....

Not that a possum is a c/c. They are just critters to me. I'm scared of them that they might bite or something if not tamed but they don't gross me out like - you know. Anyway, I'll bet he's gone on to his possum-y reward and won't have to be cold this winter or anything.

I know what you mean. They aren't like spiders, scorpions, snakes, etc. But still they are scary because of the threat of rabies in my opinion. I don't care if it is a skunk, lol. I don't want it to suffer. I think he has too. I am not sure he could have walked well. The only thing I can come up with, since I didn't find the body, is he may have gone on someone else's property. I am just telling myself he is in possum heaven right now.

I guess I am in the weird category...I will try my best to catch a fly in the house and put it outside. Once I was driving I saw a large grasshopper by my wiper blade...I stopped and let it off. When I was 17 and driving at night I could have sworn I hit a dog or something on a highway. I came home crying so hard my parents thought I hit a person. They went back to where I said it happened and said there was a box in the road. To this day I think they just "told" me that to make me feel better. This time of year when animals are getting ready for the winter there are alot more of them killed trying to get across the roads. I try my best to keep an eye out for any especially at night.

I have a sister she hates to kill anything including bugs and like me she hates cockroaches she won't kill them. Me on the other hand I usually won't kill spiders unless its poison one then its dead, they eat other bugs but cockroaches omgosh I will kill it!

I think it should be normal to have compassion for any suffering animals or human. Sadly there are some people who will go out of their way to hit any animal in the road. The opossum probably had a home nearby that it could have gone back to and either died there or recovered.

I think it would be very hard to find it. It amazes me, living in a densely wooded area, that there is so much life out there that we don't see during the day. But if I turn on my back light on at night there are any number of critters that I might see. I don't know where they go during the day and I don't go looking for them either!

Don't I know it! It seems like they wait until I take my girls to go potty to appear here!! I have lots of woods around me and God only knows what all is out there.

I went looking today myself to see if I could find a body. But I did not find one. I looked all around the area it was hit. Nothing. I know he couldn't have got far with a back side injury. But I guess they are tougher than I think. He might have went into the woods next door. It is very close. I am too chicken to go through there. I really don't want to see any other unwelcome guests.

Do you have foxes in your area? Foxes will nab a slow moving opossum for a meal sometimes. Yuck! Nature can be cruel but it happens. The fox population has made a big jump around here in the last couple of years. They are more of a night time animal as well.

We do but I have never seen one. As far as seeing, it has been only deer, turkey, possum, armadillo, skunk, and creepy crawlers. But I still have to be careful around them because my girls think they are there to chase.

On our other property (about 2 hours from my house and is surrounded by national forest) we have bear. They scare the you know what out of me!
