Don't feel bad. Shooting it in the head would instantly stop its suffering - not pretty but it would be a kindness under the circumstances. I've heard that men in war did that for men terribly injured beyond all help, often after being asked to by the injured one. I pray he went ahead & passed relatively quickly.
