You could try checking for an AKC sanctioned dog club in your area. Sometimes you can find clubs on the AKC website. Some of the obedience and agility trainers are very good and offer classes sponsored by the club. Some of these people have years of experience in training dogs for field trials and are good at teaching people how to train their dogs properly.

I was nieve personally and the first trainer I worked with I was displeased with when she reccomended her herm spense (pinch collar) for my dog with dog aggression.

I tried it once, my Scoobers yelped, I have never forgiven myself for following that advice.

The second trainer I met with said never never and actually was aware of ct and told me to use a harness, reccomended a behaviiralist and alternative methods.

That's just my specific experience though.

Because often times harnesses are used to *encourage* dogs to pull. So trainers prefer a collar over a harness. Many trainers simply aren't educated on different breeds, though, and the issues that could arise with using a collar vs. harness on a tiny dog.

In general, harnesses DO make them pull more. But now we have options available to us (like the Easy Walk with the d-ring on the front) and a lot of people even with big dogs use them now. I think if you're a good trainer, you can just as easily teach a dog to walk nicely on a harness as a collar.

You should temporarily (a couple hours) restrict that one to a confined area, WITH a potty pad, or independent access to outdoors. Clean the place (as best you can) and spray it with a Scent Neutralizer. Then, put their favorite treat on that spot (and anywhere else you may be concerned about) for them to find. It will start identifying the place with living space, rather than potty space.

You should also rethink the Potty Breaks timing, you may be forcing it to evacuate, when a little "re-timing" might help a lot.

A little reminder that I read. It is not happy news. Yorkshire Terriers can be hard to train. Today my boys peed on their little carpet steps. Another load in the wash. I take them out, treats, and they still have accidents. I am not giving in. They will learn to go outside or wear a belly band!

HA, yea I've herd that too. In fact, I read somewhere that of the Terrier Breeds they were only surpassed by the Airdale in difficulty to train.

However, I'm not entirely sure I agree with that. I think if you have one or more older well trained animals, and bring in a puppy, the older(s) is REALLY valuable in teaching the puppy. I also think that personality has a lot to do with it as well. Little Alpha wantobes can be pretty stubborn, Female or Males.

I have not read the entire thread, but heres my 2 cents.... My babies do get time apart...not very often though. They are best friends, cuddle bugs, partners in crime... I would never separate them purposely because some trainer said they would grieve too much later on... Thats a load of #$%^. Again, Just my opinion!

Gracie was one of the easiest dogs to train I have ever had. She went right to the pee pads without me even showing her. She slept with me from day one and never had an accident on the bed. She is my first Yorkie so I can only speak for her. I do think that it is very easy to lose track of what a little dog is doing and some people give their dogs too much freedom before they are ready and that only makes the problem worse. Gracie was not crate trained but she was not allowed out of my sight when she was awake and she was always near her potty pads. It may have been a different matter if I had outdoor trained her first.
