| My Carpet!!!! My 9wk old Lili is peeing and pooping all over my carpet. I have been letting her run around the house but she is killing my carpet. When I put her in her pen she does well going on the pad but she crys when I put her in there. How long is too long to be in the pen? How long should I let her stay in there (I guess that is the same question)? I would just like to hear what other people do b/c I'm sure that my house (2000sq.ft home) is too large for her to be running around wild in, right? Thanks for the help! |

| When Rowdy was little, I confined him to the den and my office. I am very lucky that both these rooms have stained concrete floors so his "accidents" were easily cleaned up. I'm also lucky that my hubby is retired so between he and I (I work), we could take Rowdy outside, stand there and say, "Go potty" a jillion times about every 1/2 hour. He still had accidents, but he usually went potty outside when we took him out. When we had to be gone, we put him in his x-pen. He did pretty well, but still had accidents till we got a doggie door and he could come and go as he pleased. It only took him a day or two to begin to go out on his own and then he rarely had an accident after that (he did have some but they were pretty infrequent).

| We have a doggie door but he is too little to be outside by himself. We have a pond in the back. I know that once he is old enough to go outside I wont have a problem..it is just geting the house to not smell like dog poop in the meantime. |

Sometimes I wondered to myself....why did I sign up for this??? First you need to decide if you want him to use pads or go outside. You can't try training both in the beginning, it's too confusing. If you decide pads, you can work towards going outside later. You need to confine him unless you are with him the entire time, and even then....they are quick little buggers and will potty right in front of you. He cries to get out of the pen because that works...in other words, you let him out. I didn't do pads, I just went outside like Rowdy's parents. Some pups do well with pads and some don't. I just didn't want to train mine to go inside. Trace is able to hold it, but I still make a point to either take him or ask him (if I ask, he will go to the door)outside. At work he'll go to the door on his own. At home I think he gets too busy playing. Accidents are very, very infrequent. I'm sure someone will post to help or do a quick search, there's alot of advice in the archives.

I said on another thread that when Rowdy was little, I am sure he thought his name was, "Go Potty" tbradly, I do understand about him being too little to go out by himself - we were the same way - even if we'd had the doggie door when Rowdy was little, we woudn't have used it because one side of our fence is chain link and he was so little he could go through the holes in the fence And there is a gigantic black lab rotty mix in the yard beyond the fence (he's really a sweetie though - but he sounds MEAN and acted like he might eat Rowdy at first) But when he got too big for the holes and we got the doggie door, our life became so much easier. Don't give up! Also, I remember someone on YT said not to steam clean carpets with urine stains because the steam will "set" the urine stains and the odor won't come out. I'm not sure if that is true or not, I don't have carpet - but I would check it out if I had carpets.

| I think the potty training is the hardest thing to teach. Kelsey is just now getting the hang of things...and doing really well. Although she will have a slip up every now and then. I suggest keeping your dog confined somewhere when your gone, like in a crate or kitchen etc. then as soon as you get home take her out. Then repeat taking her outside about every hour or so. If you feed her i'd wait at least 15-20 min before taking her out potty...maybe sooner depending on your dog. This is the time she'll have to go the most...so be sure to really keep an eye on her after she's done eating if she looks like she needs to go take her right away and be sure to congratulate her excessivley when she does good. Kelsey gets all happy and excited when I use positive reinforcement. I always take my Kelsey out potty right before bed also, just to clear her bladder so she wont wake up in the middle of the night, and about 6 or 7am she has to go again. I hope this helps!

| I'm speaking from advice given to me when I got my first Yorkie and from personal experience. 9 wks is too young to have free roam of an entire house. She will keep pooping everywhere until you confine her at least to one room. I had the pen also. They will learn to pee/poop on the pad in their pen. But if you let them loose it is difficult for them to run all the way back to that pee pad . Unless you put pee pads everywhere which doesnt look pretty and doesnt always work. I had my hubby make a gate to my family room so he was confined to the familyroom only and he soon learned to use 1 pee pad in the familyroom. They will have accidents now and then. He is now almost 2yrs old and does pretty well. We ended up removing all the rug except the bedroom rug. He now roams free in the house, we keep the bedroom doors closed and he does use a pee pad when in my bedroom. The only thing I could tell you is that it can take 3 months to train them ,1 yr and some are never fully trained ...only time will tell.BE PATIENT.It sounds easy I know but you dont want a pup that will pee out of nervousness either. I had one since she was 8 wks old and she always would pee when we tried to carry her or call her.My vet told me that they can be traumatized in the first weeks and never get over it Genie
