| Howling...HELP So Miss Mia my deaf Biewer is a howler. Their routine was a little mixed up today in that usually I leave and Mia and Mini can hear/feel me leave cuz our garage is attached (I think she can feel it). Anyway, I didn't leave right away this morning I sat in my car and took a call...I heard Mia howling, I couldn't believe my ears, she struggles to bark and when she does its a very odd bark...but she was howling away...I didn't know what to do so I left and went to work. But now I am worrying, is she howling all day? Right now we have no neighbors so it wouldn't be a big deal, but when we move SOON we will have neighbors on both sides with about 14 feet seperating our houses...I have a nosey neighbor on one side who would complain.... any thoughts or recommendations? Can howling be cured?

| My neightboor's dogs do that, and when I moved to this house, she personally came and talk to me about it. Tcan hear them from inside of my house, and we are not that close; in fact, there are two garages in between our houses. However, we came to an agreement: if she wasn't bothered by trixie's bark, I would not be bothered by her dog's howls. Trixie passed away, and I got used to the noise. They don't bother me at all. Maybe you'll be lucky like that.

| I found out I have a couple of babies that howl their tiny little hearts out when I leave in the morning....I too found out about it when I left for work, then realized I still had my bedroom slippers on my feet, so I had to turn around and go back home....I had only gotten a couple of blocks from the house...wasnt gone but about 8 minutes....and when I went back into the house, Macaela and Amelia were in my bedroom, howling their hearts out, PLEADING with momma not to leave them all alone at home by themselves.....it absolutely broke my heart!!!! So, all I can do, is leave my T-Shirt that I sleep in, spread out on my bed, and they both curl up on it, on my bed, by my pillow.....momma smells ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!!, but the T-Shirt seemed to do the trick! |

| My heart goes out to you. My Gracie (who was a puppy mill, 2 time rehome rescue) screams. Yes, screams, it is the most nerve shattering high pitched yelp howl I have ever heard. It reminds me of feral cats breeding and fighting. She does this when I leave. We are blessed to own our own home and have a large yard. So I doubt the neighbors can hear her. I have tried many things to make it less stressful for her. Treat filled Kongs, Mama smelling blankies and socks, favorite toy, TV on and so on. We set up a camera recorder to see how long she did this. It lasts less than 2 min.s. It is repeated when she hears the car return. I don't think she would have adapted very well to a noisy apartment style life. Our home and neighborhood is fairly quiet. I have talked with other trainers and we all agree it is different for each dog. Here are some things that we found might help: Thunder shirt, heart beat recording, TV on, closed blinds and darkened rooms, cooler temps, a playmate, Mommy smelling things, classical music, interactive puzzle toys, and behavior modification training.

| So my boys are 7 years old and (same exact situation as you described, where they knew I left the house but knew I hadn't left the garage yet) and they started howling. I never heard them howl before! At first I didn't know what the noise was, then when I really listened I heard it. It was actually heart breaking! I stayed outside and maybe 5 mins at the most they stopped. I have no neighbors close where I live either, but I used to live in a condo. I used to leave a radio on for them all day when I was at work and that seemed to help a lot. I used to get letters from the condo association about their barking/howling, but after I left the radio on for them I never heard from the condo association again.

| Poor girl. She must be stressed... I wouldn't think that she would howl all day, would she? She probably just knew you hadn't left and was upset. For my two, I always give them a treat when I leave for work... So they are happy to let me go. When we run errands, I always tell them "You have to stay. Be good and guard the house" so they know that they don't get to go and seem to accept it... They go sit on the couch and wait for us to get back

| I don't know if there's a cure for howling but I do live in a Apt. that has 2 other tenants in the bldg. and have wondered if Yazmin barks while I'm away. I've asked the other tenants several times if they hear her and they've assured me they don't hear a sound. I've also left a voice activated recorder on in the past and only heard her barking at the TV. She watches Animal Planet while I'm gone and especially enjoys the Dog Whisperer! She loves barking at the dogs on the screen! In the meantime, I've recently found this app through iTunes that's great for watching her while I'm at work. SKJM - iCam Basically after all my worrying whether she's either barking, crying, or lonely all day, I see she spends most of her day napping! Maybe for your own peace of mind, you could see if Miss Mia is howling all day by trying either a voice activated recorder or the app. She would probably enjoy some action on TV also to keep her occupied between her naps. |

| I don't know any cure for such a thing but you might want to pretend to leave sometime. Drive out the drive way the way you usually do and then walk back and stay outside to see how long she howls. If she stops within a few minutes it may at least help you to feel a bit better about the situation. I know it must cause you a lot of stress knowing your dog is so upset. |
