So my boys are 7 years old and (same exact situation as you described, where they knew I left the house but knew I hadn't left the garage yet) and they started howling. I never heard them howl before! At first I didn't know what the noise was, then when I really listened I heard it. It was actually heart breaking! I stayed outside and maybe 5 mins at the most they stopped. I have no neighbors close where I live either, but I used to live in a condo. I used to leave a radio on for them all day when I was at work and that seemed to help a lot. I used to get letters from the condo association about their barking/howling, but after I left the radio on for them I never heard from the condo association again.
