Vets, Puppy Mills and Pet Stores

Just curious do you think a good vet or a reputable vet knows about the connection of pet stores with puppy mills. Do you think they know about the horrors of puppy mills. In your opinion would a good vet would encourage the breeding of a yorkie pair bought at a pet store?

I think if I went to my Vet and told him I was going to buy a female yorkie and male yorkie from a pet store and breed them, I dont think he would tell me not to... Maybe he would, I don't know.. what does it matter.. as long as you are getting quality health care from your Vet to your dog.

Does that make him a bad vet? In my book NO. What matters is how he treats my dog when I take him there, also how he educates me on Peanuts health.

Are you going to base everything of what your vet knows about puppy mills and pet stores??

I know my vet is an excellent vet and he would think I had lost my mind if I told him I was planning to breed dogs from pet stores He would give lots of information about puppy mills and pet stores for sure. is there a reason for the question?

yes, the reason is someone told me that a statement I made inferring that a reputable vet should or would know about puppy mills and not encourage the breeding of two pet store yorkies was ignorant. LOL while I know I am not ignorant it got me wondering if I was crazy to think that a good vet would know the horrors of puppy mills. The operative word is "good and reputable", I know even puppy mills have vets that will sign off on sick dogs.

Well that is against what ethical breeders would ever consider and I would think an ethical vet would advise you against this completely. WOW I cannot even imagine continuing to have my babies treated by a vet that thinks this is okay

Because my vet has always encouraged me to spay/neuter my animals I would have to say NO, she would not agree with me breeding pet store pups.

I think if your vet didn't advise against this PM breeding, maybe he has $$$ in his eyes, more messed up pups with problems to treat.... IDK.

Isn't there somewhere you can look up a PM dog? My Tink was originally bought at a petshop, then the original owners bred her, untested... she has LS. Wonder if I can track her puppies down?

yes she is a mix, and yes Lola is a yorkie pom, and an amazing one, as you must have read in my tag line yes I bought her, I also bought her at 4 months of age at a healthy weight and then had lots of tests including two rounds of blood work done on her, will I breed her NO, NEVER, even though I think she is perfect, I would NOT even think about it, she was spayed at 6 months. What that has to do with my question or my right to ask if a good vet should know about puppy mills and if pet store puppies should be bred is beyond me

I have to say it would *really* bother me if a vet wasn't aware of and against mills . To me, it would be like a human doc not being aware of a widespread devastating issue that affects the well being of those they treat.

Ideally, I'd want vets to be aware of the pet store/mill connection and would educate their clients on what that means for a dog's inherited health (not to mention mental health of these kiddos).

I agree completely with this. I know my vet is very active in advising clients to spay/neuter, and would be horrified if someone suggested the breeding a dog they'd bought in a pet shop.

Sadly one of my fosters who will likely be with me for life is a very sad example of how ignorant a vet can be. Martini is by far the most extreme case of a greedy vet I've ever had the horror of seeing - She has 3 deformed legs, had the biggest bi-lateral inguinal hernias I've ever seen, very difficult to control ulcers, severe anemia, and that was just the tip of the iceburg - And she was 6 weeks old when I got her into rescue And why? Because the greedy idiot that bred her purchased her parents from the pet store - And THIS IDIOT WAS A VET And he had said that there was NOTHING wrong with Martini but a dislocated elbow that he'd repaired - WOW! The defects to her 3 legs are so severe she'll be able to walk, she just hops around, she's a happy puppy the way she is, but far from a healthy normal dog. She just turned a year old, and I'm celebrating, because every day with her is a gift - If she makes it to 5, it'll be amazing, with the extent of her physical and medical issues this greedy vet has created by only caring about money (he admitted to selling the rest of her litter back to the petshop for $1000 a piece ), and all for the almighty dollar - Makes me sick!

I think any vet worth their salt should be aware of the problem with puppy mills and back yard breeders, and take an active roll in educating their clients and would-be back yard breeders against it. Sure they profit off the poor babies that are created as a result of it, that often have a multitude of health problems! But I must admit, I had a great vet I loved - Until I found out he cared for the puppies that entered a near by petshop, I stopped going there then and there, and would never support him again!

I purchased Mini from a store, her Vet was contracted with the store to service all pups from there, hes a greedy pos. No I would not go to a vet who in any shape, way or form supports ANY unethical practices.

I know for certain my current vet does NOT. Not only is she a vet but shes also a anonymous rescuer! No one is to notice the 12 dogs and cats she has. Both her and her husband who is also a vet are against the unethical breeding etc.,

So no if my vet supported, worked for, with or aided in any way I would not go to them. I think a vet who practices medicine should also have a moral standard.

It all ties in together doesn't it? For someone like yourself, I would think you would be against someone breeding mixed dogs.. and of course buying one- I'm going to assume you paid decent money for her... when we have so many dogs in the shelter to adpot- it just really doesn't make sense to me- I'm trying to understand it, that's all.
