| Why is my yorky so aggressive with kid? I thought it would get better as he got older Hi All, You may have read my previous posts about Rudy my male yorky who is now 1 1/2 yrs old he is bi polar i believe it is weird. Last night I had my friends over with their children. I had to put him in my son's room because all he does his bark at the kids and run after them and he was in the basement with them the one kid tried to pick him up and he said he went to bite his face. Now I know this is what he does at times to my children if they grab him too much he growls and than can nip them. But than he is waiting for them to wake up waggin his tail giving kisses so i dont get it. Another issue is for ex tonight i took him in the car b/c he used to get car sick now he is better and looks forward to a car ride to my moms w/ my daughter. We talk a walk by my moms but we could hardly walk b/c he was trying to go after my daughter while she was in the stroller she is 5 yrs old but he would literally bark like someone was strangling him and not walk looking back to get her in the stroller. It makes me really angry b/c I can not have this behavior. I may have to consider a trainer does anyone have any suggestions. It seems like movement is what gets him started I wonder if it has to do with where he was born the breeder etc? I dont want to get rid of him but sometimes I think he needs a family w no kids i have 3 kids however all of my other yorkies were great w/ kids help thanks denise |

| Hi Denise, My boys don't do well with kids because they don't trust them. Kids move fast, they are unpredictable, and often loud. This makes my guys nervous. We have had bad experiences too with kids being rough and sadly, throwing things at my doggies. The problem could be an inherent personality trait or it could be a bad experience. I would supervise your dog and the kids when together and enlist the kids to participate in training exercises. Teach the kids how to recognize when the dog is overwhelmed, nervous, or not ready to play. Show the kids what to do. For visiting kids, don't expect instant friendship between the dog and visitors. Not all dogs are naturally friendly this way. Everything is like a training exercise. If the visiting kids come running in and want to start playing and touching your dog, this may be frightening to him. Teach the kids to let the dog come them on his own terms. I would also discourage kids from picking him up.

| Thank you for your feedback. My kids are older 9, 6 and 5 but my 2 younger ones are a bit rough with him or like to pick him up often and i know this probably has alot to do with it. But why when we are walking with him on a leash it is like my children are strangers?? scary barking like I would need to muzzle him thats how bad he gets. Did you ever have a trainer come in? |

| He's acting like that because he is scared and insecure around the children and the barking is a warning by a likely worried little dog. Quite a few small dogs are like that. He doesn't believe you can keep him safe in their presence or he would not act like that most likely.

| I noticed my dogs play differently with my son then figured out why. He would play tug of war, running, jumping on the couch, just general rough play where I hear the dog with this 'gonna getcha' type snarl. Not angry but very focused on aggressive play. I had to teach him and hubby that the rough, mouthy play isn't good and shows that is the way to get started playing and how to play with everyone. Shanti will be 4 in Novenber and still will run up to me and use my leg as a springboard. She jumps, hits my leg then propels off. I hate that. Maybe your baby just thinks everyone that size should be played with that way. It's fun for the kids to have puppy chase them and growl a bit and not get them. Do the children play hard with your baby?

I do have a senior citizen in the house and can tell you that people need just as much training as the dog. Dad always forgets to tell the boys to "stay" at the door, etc. Barking outside at your kids on walks -- your dog is probably generally nervous/excited outdoors and he is taking it out on the kids. I think a good trainer, one who believes in positive reinforcement methods and one who will work with your kids too, would be a very good idea if it is possible for you. Just know that your dog isn't mean...he is acting out of fear and anxiety.
