YT 500 Club Member | coconut oil on dry flaky skin? Hi guys, as you my all know about zooey, the puppy broker/puppy mill baby I have. She's been going through this skin issue for over two months. She's back on antibiotics, I'm giving her fish oil in food, and noe bathing her with this perscription shampoo with clorhexadine in it. Her bald spots are still very dry, and flaky, and I was wondering would coconut oil applied directly on those spots would hurt her? She doesn't seem to be improving. Although her fur is trying to grow back, her skin I still yucky!

| Applying coconut oil topically will not hurt her and is supposed to be excellent for hot spots and dry skin. Even if she licks it off, that's perfectly fine! Make sure you get cold-pressed extra virgin coconut oil. We use CocoTherapy but it's kinda overpriced (A LOT overpriced haha) so when we run out, I'm just going to get a jar of the Nutiva that you can get at GNC or online. Rubbing a little coconut oil on top of her flakey, itchy skin will definitely provide some soothing relief. I use it on my skin too for the same purpose...it works wonders! |

| Coconut oil is tremendously healing and I bet it will help The best part is, if she licks it off, it won't hurt her at all and will even help. You can put a little bit in her food as well. Start slowly though to avoid tummy upset! I gave Izzy too much one day accidentally and she got loose stools. Mine get 1/2 a tsp twice a day, mixed in their soft food. You can also microwave it for a few seconds and coat their kibbles with it I hope your little one's skin gets better soon, poor thing! I know you've been trying so hard to help her heal up. Have you checked out a vet dermatologist yet?

Animal Dermatology & Allergy I found this with a quick Google I don't know how big Modesto is, but it could be worth the drive if they can help your little one to heal faster, or even to properly diagnose what her condition is. I'd talk to the vet about her having any vaccines at all until her skin is better. Her little immune system is already taxed from fighting this skin problem and I'd be concerned that the vaccine could set her healing back, or if it would even be effective at this time due to her condition. At least discuss that with her vet before proceeding Big hugs to you and your baby!!!

| Puppies like this can have autoimmune issues. Maybe try to find a food with less grains. She could be reacting to a multitude of things. The coconut oil is a good start. The shampoo you are using may be a bit strong for a small puppy. Have they done a scraping of the skin to see what she has going on there? |

| You can also find Coconut Oil at Sprouts or like a Trader Joe's type store. That is where I bought the Nutiva coconut oil.. It wasn't that bad in price about 12$ http://www.awakeandliving.com/.a/6a0...c548970b-800wi Also I bathe my Peanut with it, I put a tablespoon in a little dish put it in the sun for a couple minutes ( I put it in my kitchen window) let it melt all the way down- then when I shampoo him I pour it on him and wash him with it, I make sure I get under his belly and armpits.. After his bath he is sooo soft and smells so good!!!

| Probiotics are a real help with yeast issues, and as a backup for the havoc caused by antibiotics. I have had amazing results with my Wheaten terrier I just feel bad that it took me so many years to find out. |

| I guess I don't understand why they cannot tell the difference between a bacterial infection and a yeast infection. There is a huge difference and continuing to treat a yeast infection with antibiotics will only make it worse. Over use of antibiotics actually can cause yeast to increase. I hope they are not just guessing and using whatever on her. Probiotics will help with yeast if it is not too severe but the antibiotic would continue to work against them. Please ask them to give you a better idea of what you are dealing with. Immunizations should be put of if possible until this particular issue is resolved. Just don't take her out in public or mix her with other dogs until she is better. You don't want her to pick up a disease or give one to someone else's dog. |

| Well, if they charged you for a scraping or any kind of lab test you should get your money back. This type of medicine is either incompetent or they are just lining their pockets with the money you have to spend on return visits. |

Please, consider changing vets. This one does not sound competent! Her skin has been this way for too long
