Potential parent to a new Yorkie

Okay, so I briefly dated a girl, and I fell in LOVE with her dog. I'm normally not a dog person, but I just absolutely love this little guy. I found myself wanting to take him everywhere!!

Okay, so now for my questions:

black, brown and gray hair. Is this a majority? Are they all around 3.5 pounds? Hers didn't bark really. It was the friendliest dog possible. I didn't even bark when we were outside. It didn't even bark around other dogs. It was just a playful, awesome and friendly dog. We threw a Cardinals jersey on him and took him everywhere.

I've read they can be hard to housebreak(a dog that small has to. I'm assuming their bladder is tiny). What about a litter box?

There's my rant. I have been doing countless research on places to get the perfect little friend. I haven't stopped thinking about getting one for weeks. Any help is appreciated!

Oh my gosh what a cute little guy.

I went to using the piddle pads with my Teasell. Can't say she is 100% but I love her with all her little faults. Potty training seems to be one of those things that takes consistent training. Hope you find the Yorkie of your dreams. My Teasell is the sunlight in my day

To answer your questions;

Colors vary, some are different, some are the same.
No, not all Yorkie's are 3.5 pounds, I have a 4 month old little guy & he's 4 pounds.
Barking, well Bentley barks at everything he sees, he's still a pup, and he's crazy with a bunch of energy that never dies down. He has been getting better though.
House breaking, good question. Every Yorkie is different, one will learn faster than the other. It takes a lot of time and patience.

They all come in different sizes, colors, looks, personalities, coats, 3lbs or 8lbs, black or brown, barking or not. I am almost positive you will love your little furbaby the way they are! That makes it the fun part, they seem so alike but yet so different.

As to where to find a Yorkie, try searching for breeders in your area.

Visit with the foster and get a slightly older dog. They are in need of love, they have personality to spare, and many are potty trainind already. I have an 11 y/o that was 9 when I got him and an 8 y/0. They both play. They both give all the love and affection a person could want. The Older guy does'nt bark unless he hears my car in the driveway, and Titus barks only at the door when there is someone there or the UPS truck goes by. other than that quiet sweet babies...who are great snuggle bugs at night too. One potty trained outside, the other is pee pad trainind.

Welcome to YT I see the Yorkie Bug has hit you hard After I saw my first Yorkie, I knew I would have one someday, and it took a few years but I finally got one, and then when my first girl passed away, I got two more

I think a rescue would be wonderful, there are so many babies in need of a good home, and a lot of the time they are pretty well potty trained. A puppy, while adorable, is a lot of work If you really do want a puppy, though, a good place to start looking is at Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, on their Breeder page. Please buy your breeder first, then the pup. There are so many horrible breeders out there, selling sick little puppies, I would hate for you to become victim to that. There can be so much heartache involved with a backyard breeder's pup, or a pet store (puppy mill) puppy. There is also a New Home/Rescue section here where you might be able to find a dog in your area.

All yorkies are different lol. Mine is 16 pounds, was pretty easy to potty train, and doesn't bark. Yorkies are very smart! You need to make sure you get a healthy yorkie though that comes from a good breeder. You want AKC registered, a breeder who breeds excellent examples of the breeds, genetic testing, parents free of LP, puppies don't go home before 12 weeks, and a health guarantee. You need to make sure the dogs are not being kept in an outside building or outside, you want to see both parents, and a good breeder will not breed many breeds and will not breed mixes.

You've been bitten too. I was bitten by the yorkie bug while dog sitting for my neighbhors yorkie. I fell so much in love that when my neighbhor moved I decided to get a yorkie as well.

At first I was going to get a puppy but I actually ended up getting a rescue who was 7 yrs old when I got her. It was the best decision I've ever made. 5 yrs later and she is still with me being my best friend. If you do decide to go with a puppy, please be careful as there are so many greeders out there. The folks on this site will let you know what to look out for

My little one was used for breeding and it breaks my heart whenever I think about the conditiions she came from so I don't think about anymore. It's a good thing that you are doing research first. Wish more people would before getting a pet.....maybe then we wouldn't have so many animals end up in shelters.

Welcome to YT. You already got some good answers to your questions. My best advice is either buy from a good breeder or go with a Yorkie Rescue if you are determined to have a puppy. Older dogs can sometimes be found at rescues, or an animal shelter. Please read all you can about Yorkies, training and care. I think the more you know about this unique breed the better. There's really no absolute way to know what size a yorkie will be until it is grown. You can only guess based on the size of the parents or past siblings. I have one that is 9lbs (Maggie) and one that is 10 lbs (Ginger). My 9 lb yorkie is a little overweight, but my 10 lb yorkie is solid as a rock and not at all overweight (she's quite a bit larger than my 9 lb yorkie).

My yorkies are slightly different in color too. Maggie is black and a lighter tan, while Ginger is a mix of black, gray (blue), and a darker tan or almost light gold. Maggie has a cottony coat and Ginger has a silky coat.

Mine bark quite a bit, but they learned that from our other older dogs we had/have. They are still my babies and I love them to death! I'm sure you will love your new dog too. You can work with the new dog and try to get it trained how you like. Whether you get a puppy and train it your way, or get a slightly older dog is entirely up to you. I have always gotten puppies and prefer it that way.

Potty training takes time, effort, and patience. They can be stubborn but again you need to be persistent. Positive enforcement works good too, using lots of praise and a treat when they do good. Mine still have an occasional accident in the house, but it is pretty rare. The good thing about a small dog is that their piddles are small too.
