| Help! Incessant licking, I'm at my wits end! Hello! I know I've been absent for a few months, things have been very busy but I need some help!! I'm at my wits end with Chaos. Riot was by no means easy to train, he has that yorkie stubbornness but Chaos is a nightmare in comparison. I feel awful saying that but it's the truth. He is extremely hyperactive and is always up in your face. We're working on manners and obedience with him but it's very slow progress. The worst though, BY FAR, is his incessant licking!!! Everything I've read on licking deals with dogs licking their bed, carpet, blanket, mostly inanimate objects. But Chaos licks people! I promise you that if he is in reach of you, his tongue is not in his mouth. He will jump up on the back of the couch just so he can lick your face, he'll climb on my lap and fight to get at my hands just to lick them. He licks hands, feet, arms, legs, whatever he can reach. You can't pet him anywhere without him twisting around and licking your hands. And it's almost constant! All the time! I'll firmly tell him no lick and set him on the floor or away from me and he will sit there for a moment just licking the air before tries to lick me again. And not just me, everyone. He doesn't respond to a spray bottle, which Riot hated. You can spray him until he's soaked and it doesn't phase him. The few things that do work only seem to phase him for a few seconds before he jumps back into licking (or whining, that's another behavior he can't seem to stop) I have an ultrasonic remote that emits a noise that he hates, he also hates when I thumb him on the nose or clap my hands, every time I do it I say a firm NO LICK and he puts his ears down and shrinks to the floor but after about 5-10 seconds he's back to licking again. I will do something to correct his behavior and when he backs off, the second I say GOOD BOY! or GOOD NO LICK! he goes right back to trying to lick again. He's almost 7 months old and he's getting neutered next week, I'm hoping that will calm him down some. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

| If Jada and Bogie are anywhere near me...they lick, lick, lick. It doesn't bother me and I have found if I leave them alone, they will stop after about 5 minutes. They seem to be more intent with the licking if they have been alone for most of the day.

| Its a yorkie obsession lol. All of ours have been lickers. Partly out of affection and the other I think maybe its the salt in our skin, I dunno lol but they all love to lick. Laddy will climb on the back of DH's chair and lick the top of his head for as long as DH can stand it lol.

| Rosie will lick when she is excited. It doesn't bother me. When my dad visits she loves to try to lick his face. He picks her up tells her no and turns her around to start petting her. After a few times she got the picture. I think you need to be consistent in what you do. Even if it dont seem to work at first. Oh and I must say, how could you resist that adorable face? . Your babies are total cuties!

| I have a pom that does this and yes it is annoying. It is very hard to spend time with her because she will lick until her tongue is dry. She however was a neglected and abused baby before coming to me,so atleast I know why she does it. When we have guests I will sometimes have to remove her to another room. It sounds like you are doing all of the right things, maybe it will just take time. |

| Licking the air, their lips, their paws, objects for no reason is an anxious behavior--especially if the dog is incessant about it. This applies to licking people too. It's probably further evidence that the dog is seeking reassurance. My parents' 10 year old female Yorkie is a very anxious and shy dog. It's like she can't sit still. If she's sitting on the couch she'll lick the couch. We say "no lick" so she stops, but then after awhile she starts licking and chewing her feet. If a person is sitting with her on the couch she'll try and lick the person incessantly, until we gently say "no lick" and shake our heads. She has learned that she gets praise when she stops licking. But with her, too much attention just makes her more nervous! She does this licking when she doesn't know what to do with herself. Giving her some direction, and an outlet for that anxiety, seems to help her. We'll take her in the backyard and play with her with lots of praise. We'll take her on a walk, with us leading so she feels secure, and praise her during the walk. We also interrupt her licking by having her do some tricks to earn treats and praise. Once she is reminded that she is a good girl and that we are there to lead her, to be her alpha dog, she feels much better. She'll settle down and take a nap or chew on a bone instead of licking. Sometimes just giving her a bone to chew on instead of licking whatever she's obsessed with will solve the problem. Making sure she gets plenty of exercise also prevents her anxiety from building up. Try addressing the licking issue as an anxiety issue and see if that helps. |

| Sounds like anxiety/restlessness. I'd see what the neuter does. If after that you have tried all you know to deal with the anxiety or whatever it is, then drugs are always an option. One of my dogs is a compulsive chewer...not just a puppy thing. He was hurting himself and making things very difficult for us. So he is now on a low dose of Prozac and is doing so much better. Worth a try...

| My Presley is a licker. I read some where which said it releases endorphins in their brain. Everytime I see Presley licking me it does look like he's in heaven. But, I usually snap my fingers near his ear and he stops it. |

| I have a compulsive licker too, mostly blankets and pillows, but he'll really lick anything. I've talked to my vet about it, and we think his licking is anxiety and allergies. He tends to lick more when he's having a flare-up, but usually he directs his licking at himself rather then other objects, so his paws get wet and raw sometimes. If he's licking blankets, I try to redirect. I've also increased his exercise. He's usually an indoor dog, indoor trained, we play ball inside a lot, and go to classes, I used to be terrible about getting him out (an in our old apartment it wasn't safe, there was always construction and many dog owners who didn't handle their dogs properly). He also was held inside while he was having major health issues last year. Now that that's all cleared up, I try to get him outside at least once a day, if not more. I also give him lamb ears to chew on, when he starts licking the blankets at night. That seems to distract him.
