I have a compulsive licker too, mostly blankets and pillows, but he'll really lick anything.
I've talked to my vet about it, and we think his licking is anxiety and allergies. He tends to lick more when he's having a flare-up, but usually he directs his licking at himself rather then other objects, so his paws get wet and raw sometimes.
If he's licking blankets, I try to redirect. I've also increased his exercise. He's usually an indoor dog, indoor trained, we play ball inside a lot, and go to classes, I used to be terrible about getting him out (an in our old apartment it wasn't safe, there was always construction and many dog owners who didn't handle their dogs properly). He also was held inside while he was having major health issues last year.
Now that that's all cleared up, I try to get him outside at least once a day, if not more. I also give him lamb ears to chew on, when he starts licking the blankets at night. That seems to distract him.
