| Hiding bones and crying When I give Joel his chew chew(thats what he calls his bones) he hides it and constantly sits and stares at where he hid it and also cries and whines and I don't know why. Im guessing he's gaurding it, and I pretend I don't know where it is bc if I "find" it he has to hide it again So any idea why he whines at it, I feel bad since he acts worried when he hides it |

| Oh I don't know WHY he does it - but, rest assured, a lot of them do this.... It's probably a throw-back to their old prey-days, making the kill then hiding it for future 'use'....maybe they had to show their 'masters' what they'd done, how good they were at their job? Maybe!! Sally + Harry x |

| Yeah, our Ms Daisy demonstrates a similar behavior. If she has a new bone (usually a good one, like a dental chew) she will attempt to bury it under a blanket to save it for later after she is temporarily finished. However, she is NEVER satisfied with where she had hid it, and continually "digs it up" and then reburies it. I have tried to help her out by burying it more thoroughly so it could not be seen, but she still digs it out and carries on this obsessive behavior. Dont worry about it, even a Yorkie will get tired of this behavior after a while |

| Callie will cry while she is carrying around a bone to hide but not after she hides it. She also has to re-hide it if any one "finds" it. I think its just something they do. It really can make me laugh sometimes, I love watching her because it like you can see her thinking.

| There are certain treats and chew toys that I have given Gracie that she takes one smell of and starts to hide it under something right away. She never chews it and never eats it. Other things like her bully sticks she will start to chew right away. Most of the things that she hides are things that are made of ingredients that she is known not to care much for and usually have a strange smell to them. Sometimes she will get them out and take them to a new hiding place but never uses them as they were intended. Needless to say I don't buy them anymore as I don't need to find these things in and under the furniture, dog beds and blankets. |

| I started a new post a few days ago about Suzi's behavior, she does this with her toy frog, it is small, and for the last few days has carried it in her mouth crying and whining. She was recently spayed and had a dental cleaning, so I wondered if it had something to do with that, She was acting very funny though, she would com out of the bedroom, circle the coffee table with her toy and go back in the bedroom, or she would go to the dining area with that frog in her mouth, do the same thing, and back in the bedroom. she will leave her toy right next to her, not bury it. Plus she is possessive towards her frog. She hasdone this before once, and it does not last too long. My friend was here and watched her do this several times, thought it was cute, but after a while it did get a little annoying. I just let her be and carry on, She will stop when she has had enough. The funny part of this is it is always the same toy. LOL

| Tibbe does the same thing - as have all my 3 Yorkies. They worry over their hidden prize - fretting whether it will be soon found and taken from them. I wonder if Tibbe is dissatisfied with his hiding spots available in the house, knowing they are not hidden from interested passers-by of his species when tucked under a couch pillow or beside the bookcase. The house offers little in the way of good hiding places. Even outside dogs know that a well-dug hole can be easily sniffed out, especially when the hidden object is food or bones or things with their scent on it, so they know a hiding spot is never really permanent from another canine or canine-like species. In the wild, they either have to have a large enough pack to protect their kill in a given central area or keep hiding pieces of it to keep it as safe as possible from other predators until fully eaten. Otherwise, kind of like us & our fear & worry of burglars, they are paranoid.

That makes sense, and he probably does it more bc Rosco tries to get his bones But its funny, after he hides it and stares at it he also watches everyone to make sure we dont find it and he'll even check Roscos mouth. My sister tells him "Joel, you kinda give it away when you keep staring where you hid it" lol | |

This totally makes sense! Thor doesn't bury things, but I've heard other people talking about the whining and such. But yeah, they must be so stressed about the poor security!

| LOL! Yeah, they need to pool their money and hire some good security dogs to keep their treasures safe. Oh, wait - the security dogs would make off with the goods, too!!! No wonder they whine & fret over their stuff!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Ha ha! I read something about a german shepard "hired" to guard a trove of antique teddy bears overnight (seriously). Let's just say the teddy bears where not in mint condition the following morning. Nevertheless, photos showed the german shepard to be very pleased with his work.

| Lola is the worst at this, I have posted about this before, only she puts her toys in places where she can not get it back without help from me. She now drops her toy in waste paper baskets and whines until I get it out or finally jut tips the basket over, or pushes it under a piece of furniture or behind my file cabinet, all places that she can push the toy into but not retrieve it fun. We swim and she has her own raft, now she pushes her toy off it every few mins. into the water and then stares at it floating away, then will either jump in to get it. I don't understand this behavior, but I do not it drives us nuts, be glad if you babies put their toys in places they can retrieve them from. She is exhausted today, I can honestly say she carried her new toy around for about 8 hours straight yesterday, squeaking it the majority of the time till she was huffing and puffing, She took it up and down three flights of stairs, and even jumped off the bed after lights out and ran down to the kitchen to get it, I finally had to pick it up and hide it, the second she was out of bed this morning she was staring up at the bar barking for me to get it, she must smell these toys because she did not see where I hid it. I went out for a few hours this morning and since I have been home she has slept all day because I think she is so tired from all that squeaking yesterday. LOL she will never have a double chin from all that squeaking action she does.
