| Found old-aged yorkie today Hi everyone! I ran across this forum while searching for info on yorkies. I have two shih tzu's, so I'm not too familiar with this breed. Today, my sister and I were driving and she slammed her breaks. I didn't know why she did that until she screamed that there is a puppy crossing the street. I got out the car and went to pick up the little guy; I noticed he was a yorkie. He was severely dehydrated, matted, horribly aggravated skin, had poop dried to his butt, and has cataracts in one eye. He was so weak that he couldn't even stand. We decided to bring him to the no-kill shelter. When we arrived at the shelter, the girl volunteering there said he's an extremely old dog, and she said the people who had him didn't take care of him at all, judging by his condition. We thought his tongue was sticking out because he was thirsty, but turned out he had no teeth. She said she thinks he caught a stoke, and that's why his tongue is sticking out. Have any of you heard of that happening? She spoke to the director of the shelter and asked if we could foster him for a few days until they could find him another foster home; we agreed. He took a nap when we arrived home. He drank a little water, and I fed him as best as I could. We could tell he's feeling a little better now. He's now barking, and able to stand up without help, and walking a little faster now. But, he has a hump in his back. Is that normal for senior yorkies? He woddles when he walks. I hope he isn't in any pain. Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it! Here is a picture of him before we brought him to animal rescue. http://i45.tinypic.com/2u5b61t.jpg |

| His tongue is sticking out because he has no teeth. Bless you for saving him. Also, old yorkies develop that hump in their backs.

| Dear God! He sounds like he is in need of a lot of medical care. He may not be as old as he looks as many of these dog's health issues make them appear older than they really are. Will this "no kill" shelter be able to give him the medical care he needs. Is it possible that you could find a rescue for small dogs in your area? I am amazed that this shelter would let a dog in such bad condition leave without having been seen by a vet! |

| I couldn't link right now as just reading about him & the awful state you found him in pretty much has me bawling. Thank God you stopped to help him! I mean that. Thank God for you. Wouldn't it be great if he wound up with someone who could love, nurse & care for him, aided by the finest of veterinary talent there is, through the rest of his days? I would love to hear that this little Yorkie oldster has found him a doting mommie with lots of love to spare. You are very special for trying to help this little guy & thanks again. P. S. I would get him seen by a vet right away as who knows what kind of pain or dire condition he is in.

| How terribly sad some human would kick this poor little soul to the curb, when he needs help so desperately at this time of his life. This just breaks my heart....thank you for helping him....Do you think you may be able to locate a Yorkie rescue in your area? I am not sure this no kill shelter is the place for him, in light of the fact they let him go today without a vet seeing him....I think a Yorkie rescue would be better for him....But thank you for the care YOU have given him! Maybe YOU can keep him? He will need to see a vet....this little Yorkie will add a dimension to your life and your heart and soulod you would have never thought possible..... |

| Hi everyone! Sorry for my late response, I have been working on a project for school and got a little tied up. I got in contact with the director today and we got him over to a vet, thank the lord! The vet office told us they will call us after they do a full exam on him. They will run blood work on him tomorrow. I'm just so scared he has heart worms, considering we are in New Orleans and the mosquitos are horrible. He has been so much better over the span of a few days. He's been barking, and fussing with my female Shih Tzu, lol; she's in awe of him and is utterly obsessed with him, lol. I will post a picture of her kennel stalking him as soon as I get home. I told the people at the shelter that I would foster him since I've formed such a bond with him and now view him as one of the family. I just want him to get better. This little guy is such a fighter. The only thing that has me worried is that he hasn't pooped yet, I told the vet that is my main concern. I will post more pictures in a bit. Thanks ya'll, I really appreciate all the kind words and advice. Last edited by brandi504; 06-18-2012 at 05:02 PM. |

| ooh, Thank God you found him. You are his Angel. I hope you keep us posted on how he is doing. He may just need some food, water, and a lot of love. I just adopted myself an old dog, maltese, and something mixed, blind, and deaf. People tied him up to the gate of the humane society. They found him in the morning. He is having a wonderful life with my 3 yorkies. He sleeps right next to me. Maybe that is all your baby needs too. What a different a bath can make. Keep us posted.

| This is my boy, Mario. They guessed him at 12-14 years old. (he loves to sleep on under my end table) I hope I did this right.

| Fifteen months ago I too found an old, sick, dirty, matted, toothless Yorkie gal, running down the road one cold, snowy night. I was just going to keep her for a few days, until we could find her home, or until the rescue could place her. Well, I can honestly say that she is one of the best things that has ever happened in my life. Everyone who meets this gentle soul falls in love with her, and I can't imagine my life without her. Your houseguest will need mushed up, canned food, or a good quality kibble softened in a bowl with some water. This will help him eat since he can't chew well. No teeth is why his tongue hangs out, since there is nothing to keep it in. He'll need a good vet check up, so that you know what you may be dealing with. A nice bath will help him feel better. Blow dry him if her shakes from the cold. He does not necessarily have cataracts. It could just be cloudy eyes, which is also very common in older dogs and does not affect their vision. Bless you for helping this baby. The world needs more people willing to love and care for those that are helpless. We are here if you need us. Please stay and let us know how you are both doing, and what the vet says. Again, thank you for all that you are doing for this baby. If you do decide to place her, let us know. There are several on here that are involved with Yorkie rescues who will know just what to do. Hugs! By the way welcome to Yorkie Talk. What are you calling him?

| More people need to help the old ones, instead of dumping them off at the shelters, or finding them running the streets. My boy Mario need drops in his eyes every day, but he lets me do it, so no problem. Let us know what the Vet says, and keep us updated. Sending you lots of hugs.
