Even with brushing an still eating kibble at the time Teegy was still getting buildup on his back teeth.
When I took him for his annual checkup in December my vet said I can clean those. I said I'll find something don't worry. He said there is nothing commercially available that works well. You can order stuff through me or put him on a special dental diet. I said absolutely not. I don't want that chemically engineered food in my dog. I said how much for a cleaning. He said $900 I won't repeat what I said to him.
By the power of the Internet I found these.
When I switched vets in February of this year and explained the many reasons for the switch, she said his teeth are fantastic keep doing whatever you are doing

Tibbe has got about $2800.00 in vet bills so far this year. Last ER visit charge was $95.00, x-rays $138.00, lab $250.00 for one panel plus lesser dollars for other tests. His pneumonia bout itself was probably $1700.00 as he saw two different vets, on the ER vet with overnight hospital stay, IV's, meds, cardiac specialist since the first vet thought his heart was greatly enlarged, 3 different sets of chest x-rays - the 3rd 3 weeks later to check for clear lungs, cardiac Doppler, etc. Then his Wellness Plan is probably $495.00 plus anal sac expression, this & that. His recent apparent fall in the night involved 2 visits ER vet visits, x-rays, those blood tests & approaching $600.00 probably. I do kind of prefer taking him to the ER vet as they have every piece of equipment needed to do just about anything & you don't usually have to go elsewhere. And they are used to dealing with critical dogs all the time so I like to take him there now just in case he should go south or something if he reacts to some medicine given at the vets or his condition is something a routine vet can't handle. Expensive though.

I can't remember off the top of my head the costs for a couple of things but I can say the following:

Dental cleaning/tooth extraction- $466 (just had this done a couple of weeks ago)

Wellness exam office visit-$60 w/ vaccinations (which vaccines should be spaced out in the best of interest of the furbaby)

For the first 2 years Georgie was at the Vet regularly either he wasn't eating, had diarrhea, you name it. We didn't take any chances so we took him in which cost $80+each time depending on meds & diagnosis. I would say approx. every 3months or so. It turns out he just had a sensitive tummy.

Last year we spent 8k alone for Vet visits, neuro specialists and AAI surgery.

I want to stress the importance of all the above when considering a Yorkie. I can't say my husband and I thought about all of it, but we would do it all over again if we had to for our sweet boy. We have spent less than half on our Boxer who is 6 years older than Georgie. BTW we will be getting another Yorkie because the love we have for him and vice versa totally outweighs the cost From a reputable breeder this time!

WOW!!!! I had no idea the amount I'd be paying initially when I got my little one. Spent a fortune just getting set up between crates, puppy gates, puppy pen, travel carrier, toys, clothes and bows that every Princess MUST have, lol, grooming supplies, etc. Not to mention all the vet costs. Some of this will slow down and yes I too have started a puppy fund!

General exams here are $65
Antibiotics or metronydozol or other meds for tummy upsets... I'd say $20-60 for a dose for a 5lb dog.

Revolution $96 for 6 months I think

Massage therapy for luxating patella... $30 per hour

I don't remember the neuter and dental costs, but don't forget the retained buggers, I mean baby teeth, they cost a lot too.

Oh and MOST importantly, I pay $28 per month for my insurance! it's a neccessity for me.

I am right there with you. I don't even open the Georgie file (I just slip the latest Vet bill in it) because then that would confirm I am the crazy dog lady.....thank God I married a crazy dog guy too

This is a great thread. I wish people would consider the cost before jumping into getting a dog (of any breed!). I know that no matter what, we are covered financially for our two... but I know a lot of people who would not be able to afford it if an emergency arose

That totally depends on the pup and genetics I wish petzlife or Leba III could make Sugar's teeth healthy and white. Sonicare is going a long way towards bringing her dentals to every other or every 3rd year but she will always need them.

Dog ownership is not cheap! It's either start a fund or get an AmEx Black Card!

It is amazing how different costs can be because of location.

For me it is $45 for a checkup.
$34 heartworm test
I do my own vaccines, so $100 a year
Rabies $15 every 3 years
Revolution: $54 for 3 months
Spay: $230 this is the cheapest around here
Dental: $200-$300 depending on how good or bath teeth are but I also clean their teeth my own, I just take them in if they need pulled or in bad shape, so not too often
Bile acid test: $110, I usually get these done once when they are a year old or younger
Dog food: $100 each month

I agree, sometimes you can do everything and it won't help.

Brownie has the worst teeth I have ever seen. Despite regular dentals, brushing his teeth daily, additives, and me scaling his teeth, he will most likely lose all of his teeth. The vet said I was doing everything possible, it's just not something that can be helped with him.

Destiny on the other hand has great teeth. 6 years old and never had a dental and still doesn't need one.

Genetics plays a huge role in teeth.
