| Help! Help! I have a 7 year old yorkie and a silky terrier. The yorkie is a neutered male and the silky is supposedly a spayed female or at least thats what the pound told us when we adopted her. Anyway, a few days ago we noticed that she had blood on her legs when she went outside to pee so we thought she was maybe in heat. But the whole point of this is that my male yorkie has all of the sudden freaked out! He is acting so hyper and wants to be in everyones face and is harassing our silky to the point that she is teriffied of him. He has never acted like this and is usually very calm and wants to lay on the couch and be by himself. Its like the two dogs have switched personalities. I dont know what to do! I dont want to get onto him because he doesnt know what he is doing but she is so scared and just lays there and shakes! If anyone has any advice please help, thanks!! |

| well i think the first step would to somehow figure out if she is really spayed. have your vet take a look. sometimes some vets tattoo females that have been spayed. there might also be a blood test they can do |

| hi and welcome to yt How long have you had the female? maybe your male is acting up because of this new presence in his home. maybe its because she really isnt spayed? Is there a way you could find out if she really is or not?

| Ultrasound maybe? I'd certainly look into this. If she isn't, I'd say the shelter owes you a spay since you pay for that when you adopt from them. |

| TATOO???? REALLY?????? I have never heard of this!! Where do they tatoo the female when they spay her??? Good information to know!!!! Thanks for the education!!!! To the poster, you need to verify that the dog has indeed been spayed...sounds like she has not....I HOPE she has NOT....because if she has, you have a problem of blood coming from someplace....that is NOT normal.... |

| OP you need to take your yorkie to a vet to find out where the blood may have come from. Most of the time you can see a spay scar, but sometimes they are hard to see. IF she is in heat, you will be able to see that her vulva is swollen. If you cannot tell, certainly the vet can. It also could be from bladder stones. Either way, I would have a vet check her out. Most of the time you can see a spay scar, but sometimes they are hard to see.

| My first step would be to take her to the vet or to the pound to see if she's been spayed. Call the pound and ask why they think she was spayed, that would be a good first step. You need to know what the blood was. I thought the hormones or whatever started before the blood actually showed. If he didn't start until that day I would also suspect that they had an altercation. Perhaps he bit or scratched her, drawing blood, and making her scared. Also, do female virgin dogs bleed their "first time"? Could they have done the deed (regardless of her spay status?) Perhaps she was traumatized by that? Obviously I have ZERO clues about the sex lives of dogs! |

| I would take your female to the vet the vet will be able to tell if she is in heat , hopefully that is all what's happening, and their are no serious other heath conditions. your male, even though fixed could still act or behave differently , I think around a unspayed female in heat. not too sure about that, discuss it with the vet when you take our female in. hope everything turns out ok.

| My spayed girls don't even have scars from their spays. Sounds like a vet. appt. is in order.

| yorkimom1 & ladyjane: oh yeah, they tatoo spayed females. i live in maine & when my shih tzu was spayed they gave her a little tatoo , its the sign for female with a symbol in the center. They do not tatoo nuetered males for obvious reasons. |

it is a law here , that all females spayed get the tatoo. i guess it is a universal symbol so all vets know what it means.. | |

| My parents got a Yorkie many years ago that had a tattoo on the inside of her leg. A symbol of some sort, can't remember what it looked like. Poor baby had been abused and had obviously been used as a breeder. She never totally recovered from her abuse, but at least she finally was loved and had a good life.
