| personal experience I would love to hear from anybody that has flown with their furbaby. How long was the flight, did you purchase a seat for them,do they have to stay in a cage, did your baby get sick, bark, problems with other passengers, medications to calm your baby down for the flight, anything that you will do differently if you fly again?

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | We recently took our first flight with Katie Scarlett. We left on march 17 out of Baltimore. We took a one way flight on AirTran to Huntsville to visit our families. The flight was about an hour and a half. Katie Scarlett did fabulous. She has always been a good car rider so I did not worry about air sickness and she was fine. We did take her to the vet a few days before to have a check up and make sure she was ok to fly. We got her health certificate while we were there, which by the way we were not asked by anyone to see the certificate. We got to the airport about an hour and 45 minutes early. We parked in off site parking and took the airport shuttle to the terminal. The driver of the shuttle made me put Katie Scarlett in her carrier and zip the top all the way. Once at the airport and while waiting in security I let her poke her head out and no one said anything. When we got to security I was instructed to take her out of the carrier and was allowed to hold her as I walked through the detector thingie. They also did that wand thing over her and over my hands. She was allowed to keep her outfit on. After security I put her back in her carrier but let her poke her head out and everyone had a fit over her. Lol. So many awww's and ooooh's. It was fun. I stopped at a store in the terminal next to buy a bottled water so I could pour that into her travel water bottle. I bought the water bottle at pet smart. Once we got to our gate it was already time to board and I was asked nicely there to close the carrier. On the plane I sat in the window seat and she slid under the seat in front of me. I made sure I put the vented opening toward me so she could see me. She ruffed one time, I said quiet, and we didn't hear a peep out of her the whole ride. The stewardess was cool on our flight and let me take her out to give her water mud flight. However, on our return flight (same one way, AirTran in April) we had a guy and he was a little rude. He said no when I asked if I could give her water and went on about how they are not allowed out, but the seat next to me was empty and in the end he allowed me to give her water. So I think it depends on the stewardess you get whether they allow your pet out mid flight. I highly recommend one way flights if at all possible. It made flying such a breeze for us. Also, beforehand you will want to call the airline and reserve your pet. It was $69 each way for AirTran. The pet does count as your 1 personal item or carry on. Also, many airports have pet relief areas and you can visit those beforehand if need be. We let ks go before going on the shuttle and she was fine. Or if your baby is pad trained, you can take her in the stall with you at the airport to let her go beforehand. I personally did feed ks that morning but only a small amount. We had a morning flight. She did not get sick at all. Also check with your airline on tgd size specs that your carrier is allowed to be so it will fit under the seat. Although Katie Scarlett did fit, I noticed there was a tad more room under my husbands seat in front of him, which was an aisle seat. I know many yt'ers rave over the kwigy bo bags for airline travel. They are expensive though. I just bought a small carrier on eBay for our first flight that was about $30. I wanted to make sure she was going to fly well before investing a lot of money in a kwigy Bo or nicer carrier, but I think I definitely will now. She did so good and I fly often, I want one for us. Hope this helps some!

| I once brought 2 Norwegian Elkhound puppies back from Boise, Idaho to D/FW and they rode under my seat in a carrier, slept most of the way. I was permitted back then to take them out and hold them, give them some water but then put them back in the carrier and they went back to sleep. It must have been the drone of the plane engines or something as they were 12 weeks or maybe slightly older & live wires but boy, they slept like they were drugged on that long flight. And they had had no drugs or anything to sedate them. But that was years ago before things got so different & flying was still fun. Did not have to purchase a separate seat for them.

Wow that sounds like it was a breeze! Ralph rode with me from SC to Toronto CA and he LOVED it, he loves to travel. But granted we took 30-40 min breaks so he could walk and such but it was a lot of fun. I am looking in to getting a sleepypod air carrier, one of my friends got one and Ralph loves it and it can double as a car seat, and its been tested and its just awesome. I just hope Ralph can come out. I have to go to Chicago and Vegas, usually i send my helper to do the press for me, but this year my vendors want to meet and show new products so i have to go. Hopefully the Chicago flight goes well. I will prob fly American, as I heard good things about them here on the forum. And your pictures are soooo cute! | |

| I have been traveling via air for about 22 years with yorkies, At one time the fares were like $15.00 or $30.00 each way, now depending on the airline the average is $100.00 each way, so make sure you check that out. Lola has gone with me on three round trips in the year I have had her and we will be flying again the first week of June. I posed some good tips on a recent thread you might want to check out. (link is below) I have read some posts where people have been able to get their pet their own seat, I have never seen where that is allowed and I have flown on a lot of differnt US carriers. This would be great since I can get tickets to NYC from Detroit for under $50.00 each way but it costs $100.00 each way for Lola. So be very careful before taking that advice you might wind up being out good money. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...vel-sammy.html

I'll have to google Kwigy Bo to see exactly what you are talking about. We do have a carrier but I will have to find out the dimensions allowable in the cabin. Heide and I go to Brazil every other year to visit her family.Well this year I did not go because of Gabby. This is a real long flight that takes a while to get to where we are going.Fly out of Columbus to either NJ or Texas then wait 2-3 hrs. for a connecting flight.Once up in the air to Brazil it usually a 10 hr. flight to Sao Paulo where we will wait for another connecting flight to Belo Horizonte. Oh,in a bit I will go look at your pics from your travel

| we mostly travel from Detroit to NYC to my family. she does best when on my lap, not to bad in the pet carrier. My past yorkies went all over, I even had one out in Aspen Co and took him on a ski lift as well. International travel is way different with pets than flying domestically and not just on the airline but lots of countries will put your pet in quarantine for quite a while, I even heard of as long as a month. and it could happen on both legs of the trip, so check into that very carefully prior to making any plans
